Reading Workshop • The Reader’s workshop format usually consists of a mini-lessons, group work, individual activities and a wrap up at the end. • Provides for small group groups which allows for more individualized instruction so that we can meet students where they are in reading. • Students in a class will often be working on the same topic, but not necessarily the same book/assignment

  5. Library Reading Programs • Bluebonnet Program – Students are encouraged to read several Bluebonnet books every nine weeks • Students will have regular library time available to them. • Other reading programs are offered throughout the year.

Writing • Writer’s Workshop • Teacher models the targeted writing skill • The students work in partners/small groups practicing the skill – given teacher feedback • The student works independently to authentically use the skill. • Writing process • Prewriting • Drafting • Revising • Editing • Proofreading • Publishing

  10. American History • We approach social studies/history instruction through hands on activities. We utilize lessons and materials from History Alive as well as our textbook. • Social studies lessons are also integrated into reading instruction.

  11. American History • Our themes are: • Discovering America • Colonial America • America’s Independence • America Grows • 20th Century Progress

  13. Math:Time Block – 90 minutes • 15 minutes – problem solving • 10 minutes – Mental math, basic fact review • 20 minutes – mini lesson as a whole group • 40 minutes – station work (2 stations per day when time allows) • 5 reflection – either as a group, with a friend or as a journal entry.

  14. 5th Grade Math • enVision Math Texas Series Investigation unit • First Steps • 5E Lessons • Curriculum Based Assessments (CBA) will be used as formative assessments and a grade will be taken this year (a change from last year).

  15. Math 5E Lessons • Lessons were written by 5th grade teachers in the district and used the S & S from Regional Service Center 4. • Engage • Explore • Explain • Elaborate • Evaluate

  16. Envision Math Series • The students will use the enVision Math Series website occasionally for homework or extra help. Logins and passwords should be available soon. • Textbooks will not be checked out to individual students, however books can be accessed online whenever needed. Teachers will also have books available for check out in the classrooms when necessary.

  17. MATH STATIONS • M – math facts, usually using technology • A – at your seat, finishing up mini lesson work or extra practice if needed • T – teacher station, extension of mini lesson or prior concepts still needing work. • H – hands on, a game that involves enhancing and building higher level skills.

  20. Science • Study in segments • Earth and Space • Matter and Energy • Force, Motion, and Energy • Organisms and Environments • Embedded throughout the curriculum is Scientific Investigation and Reasoning • Curriculum Based Assessments- CBAs- will be graded this year.

Science Journal • Table of contents • You may see vocabulary, lab work, reflections on new learning, scientific drawings and independent work • Expectations and grading rubric • Journal should be taken home and reviewed on a regular basis • This is a great resource for students to use to help them review and study science throughout the year

STAAR Testing – 5th • What is it? • State Test to enhance Rigor for students & get them “College Ready” • Timed Test (4 hours) – Just like SAT/ACT • Assesses previous grade level objectives to current grade (K-5th) • Reading STAAR- emphasizes critical analysis & less literal understanding • Math STAAR- Problem solving skills • Science STAAR- Earth Science; Force & Energy; Environment & Organisms • No School ratings this year; standards set Fall 2012 • Math (March 27), Reading (March 28) & Science (April 26) • No visitors FISD Google Site: https://sites.google.com/a/friscoisd.org/staar/home • FAQ, Overview, Updated periodically by FISD
