  2. Overview • SBA is 20% of the Final Mark • SBA mandatory • *Paper 032 (Alternative to SBA) • Consists of four (4) Skills to be tested • 2 year period • Random Sampling

  3. SBA Skills • Measurement/Manipulation (MM) • Organisation/Recording/Reporting (ORR) • Analysis and Interpretation (AI) • Planning and Design (PD)

  4. Timeline • Terms 2, 3, 4 and 5 (Points I-IV)

  5. Why Do SBAs? • Enhances learning of Scientific Knowledge • Motivates students • Gives insight into the Scientific Method and Develops Expertise in using it • Develops “Scientific Attitudes” • Teaches Laboratory Skills

  6. CXC & SBAsModeration/Re-marking • Syllabus coverage • Quantity of Activities (marked or not) • Individual work of Adequate Quality • Number of Graph work (>5) • Student Feedback • Mark Schemes • Standard of Marking • Appropriate Criteria

  7. Documents! • Proper Mark Scheme • Indicate Skill • Mark Breakdown • Listing of Laboratory Exercises • Table of Contents (Lab Books) • Completed Moderation Sheet • List of Samples

Breakdown: • Section A • Usually completed upon Inspection • Too Few Assessments (<4) • Too Few Activities (<6) • Section B • All Lab Activities are counted (whether SBA or Not) • Syllabus Coverage is based on how many Different Topics are covered • Total Number is based on Total Lab Activities done (whether SBA or not) • Section C • Based Totally on SBA Labs Only

Section D: • (a) Graph Work • >5 – Very Good • 5 - Satisfactory • <5 - Unsatisfactory • (b) Standard of Practical Exercises • Book with Highest mark examined • Grading based on CXC Mark Scheme for ORR (#5) • (c) Planning & Design • “Standard” PD marks automatically Halved • Highest & Lowest Moderated score ignored • Remaining scores totalled • >49 – Very Good • 30-49 - Satisfactory • <30 - Unsatisfactory

  12. Section D (cont’d): • (d) Observation, Recording & Reporting • Grading based on CXC Mark Scheme for ORR (#1,2,3 or #4,6) • (e) Analysis & Interpretation • Highest & Lowest Moderated score ignored • Remaining scores totalled • >49 – Very Good • 30-49 - Satisfactory • <30 - Unsatisfactory

  13. Specific Comments: • (a) >2 Graphs Must have been analysed • (b) >10 Diagrams (adequately Sized and Fully Labelled) • (e) Interpretation in Discussion/Conclusion

Section E: • (a) Marking was consistent • All books – Very Good • Most books - Satisfactory • Few books - Unsatisfactory • (b) Marking Reflected Standard Expected • Teacher and Moderated score compared • +/- 2 variance allowed for marks to be considered to be of expected standard • Number of scores that are of expected standard counted • >8 – Very Good • 6-8 - Satisfactory • <6 - Unsatisfactory

Conclusion • SBAs are very beneficial to students and are a useful tool to connect the Syllabus content with the “Real World” • Prepare your List of Labs and Mark Schemes before-hand (enough Syllabus coverage and correct Skills) • Do your SBAs early....avoid rushing them down • Give students feedback • Submit all relevant paperwork to CXC when requested (complete all necessary fields) • Be aware of Deadlines!
