  2. INTASC Standard, Description and Rationale Standard # 5: Application of Content The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation. Brief Description: This presentation compares two schools of thought regarding the need and effects of Sex education on minors in our schools. It also sheds light on my personal values, regarding the importance of guiding the learners to best achieve their academic goals without the disturbance of dealing with sexual issues at a young age. Rationale: In this presentation, I seek to show how, in consistence with Standard 5, schools must be an environment where children can have positive social interactions and maintain their innocence as they pursue academic goals.

  3. Overview of Issue • Rising problem of STDs and unwanted pregnancies. • Reagan administration response • Terms to the funding • State governments’ differed reactions

  4. Understanding the Programs Comprehensive Abstinence Only • Bring awareness of dangers of unprotected sex • Teach abstinence as only good measure for young people • Encourage them to make and keep promises to stay pure • Bring awareness of dangers of unprotected sex • Give options on safety measures • Demonstrate use of safety instruments

  5. Advantages of Abstinence-only • No STDs or unwanted pregnancies. • Young ladies do not lose their self-esteem and self-value. • Less diseases and emotional issues to handle • Easy on taxpayer. • Children’s chances to happier family/ stability

  6. Disadvantages of Abstinence-only • Does not address human nature of error. • Not everyone holds the same values. • Accused of exaggerating facts.

  7. My Opinion • Huge shift in the societal values today from that of the founding fathers. • My opinion as a parent • What makes the 2 sides irreconcilable • Religious dogma or it makes good sense?

  8. What Do You Think? • How much government involvement in the upbringing of children is too much? i.e. Can parents still really choose how they should raise their offspring? • How should moral values in a society be determined, if at all? i.e. Are they just religious dogmas or are we losing something important to human existence?
