  1. How does the food we eat contribute to Global Warming? By Class 1

  2. Very little of the food that we eat is produced locally. • In our shopping baskets we may have apples grown in New Zealand (24,000 miles away) • We may have prawns that were caught in Bangladesh (13,000 miles away) • Animals are being transported for long distances before they are being slaughtered. This adds to their suffering and the risk of disease.

  3. The cost of transporting our food these great distances is massive for the environment. • Air pollution from lorries and planes are contributing to Global Warming and health problems such as asthma • Roads are becoming congested • Food needs more processing to preserve it over the long distances • Small scale farmers are being replaced by larger organisations

  4. Food Miles – facts and figures • We import more than 25 million tonnes of food • In the UK, 24,000 people die each year from the affects of air pollution • A 2 minute aeroplane take off creates the same amount of air pollution as driving 21,539 cars for 1 mile at 30 miles per hour • Carbon dioxide from road transport is increasing in this country • More packaging is used to protect the food when it travels further • 80% of the food sold in the UK is sold by one of 5 major supermarkets

  5. How does what we eat affect Global Warming • Many children love beef burgers and hamburgers. • Do you know that much of the beef used in these burgers comes from animals reared in South America? • Rainforests are often cleared away to provide grazing ground for this cattle. • This forest destruction along with the methane gas that they produce all contribute to Global warming.

  6. What can be done to reduce the effects of Global Warming with reference to food? • Supermarkets could reduce the number of food miles by stocking and promoting local foods • We should try and buy foods that are grown locally and that are in season • We should check the labels of the food we buy and try and buy food that is grown locally or closer to home than other varieties. • We could try and grow our own food
