  1. Draft Simulation What would you do if you turned eighteen in 1969?

How the Draft Worked • 366 blue capsules were put in a glass container • Each capsule contained a birthdate • They were drawn out one at a time and announced – September 14 was the first capsule drawn so all young men between 18-26 with that birthday would have a draft number of 1 and would very likely be inducted into the service. • The drawings occurred live on radio & television

How the Draft Worked • The military drafted all ones, twos, threes, and so on until their needs were met • Being drafted was not an automatic ticket to Vietnam • Of the 307,276 men who reported for duty after the 1969 draft, just more than half (162,746) were inducted. The rest were rejected on physical, mental, or legal grounds. • Young men who were inducted had a 38% that they would serve in Vietnam

You are draft-age eligible… what choice will you make? • Take your chances in the draft • High Draft Number = no service • Low Draft number = another choice • Eligible for a deferment? • Judged “unfit” for service • Inducted for 2 years & likely go to Vietnam • Enlist & serve your country • For 3 or 4 years with MAYBE more choice about where you would serve • Join the National Guard/Reserves • 6 months of active duty over a six year commitment – MIGHT be called to go to Vietnam

You are draft-age eligible… what choice will you make? • Apply for “CO” status – be a Conscientious Objector • Special deferment based on religious/ethical grounds • Non-combatants in the military (medics) • Some reject all military involvement • If you didn’t receive “CO” status, you had to make another choice • Evade the Draft – go to Canada • Forfeit citizenship & become a fugitive

  7. Make your decision & move to the designated location • Take chances with the draft (Screen) • Join the Armed Forces (Flag) • Join the National Guard (TV) • Apply for “CO” status (Middle) • Go to Canada (Door)
