  2. Hebrews 3:7 – 4:16 The Faith-Rest Life • “Harden” (3:8) – present active indicative of sklērunō– to harden; to become stubborn. English “sclerosis” – a hardening of a tissue or part; an increase of connective tissue at the expense of more active tissue; a hardening of a tissue or cell wall by thickening. • “Hearts” (3:8) – kardia- cf. Ephesians 4:17-19. G.I.G.O. (Garbage In – Garbage Out! • “Futility” (Eph. 4:17) – mataiotēs– devoid of truth & appropriateness; perverseness; depravity; emptiness. Emptiness Darkened Understanding Ignorance Calloused Heart No Feeling Cut Off From The Abundant Life Found In Christ

  3. Hebrews 3:7 – 4:16 The Faith-Rest Life • “Rebellion” (3:8) – Hebrew “Meribah” (Exodus 17:7). • They hardened their hearts through unbelief. • (3:9) – God proved Himself, THEN He tested them. • (3:10) – They didn’t even know (understand) (ginōskō) God’s ways (hodos– a way; a road; a systematic course of pursuit; a system of doctrine – “My categories of Bible doctrine”). • (3:11) – They did not even know of the moment by moment Sabbath. • (3:12) – “brethren” – fellow believers! They didn’t trust – they hit the panic button. We need to trust verses like Isaiah 40:31.

  4. Isaiah 40:31(NKJV) But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. “Wait” – qavah– to wait; hope; expect; keep on trusting (to the end of their “no water” problem). It is the word for a “fainter” (the thin strand used to start the weaving of a mighty rope), then “to collect; bind together.” How do we weave a mighty rope of faith in our lives?

  5. Genesis 15:6 – “believed” - ‘aman- to use God as a prop; to use God as a foundation; to lean on Him. • Job 13:15 – “trust” – yachal– to trust while in extreme pain. • Psalm 37:3 – “trust” – batach– from wrestling; to pick up your troubles & slam them down on the Lord.

  6. Psalm 57:1 – “trusts” – chacah– to flee as a rabbit into the cleft of a rock. • Isaiah 40:31 – “wait” – qavah- to wait; hope; expect; keep on trusting (to the end of their “no water” problem).

  7. Hebrews 3:7 – 4:16 The Faith-Rest Life • “Exhort” (3:13) – present active imperative of parakaleō – come alongside to help (cf. John 14:16 Scofield note) (cf. Hebrews 10:25). “Exhort” – to arouse to action by words or advice. “Encourage” – to inspire with courage, spirit, or hope. “Comfort” – to relieve mental distress; console. • “Hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” – unbelief is sin; not trusting is sin.

  8. Hebrews 3:7 – 4:16 The Faith-Rest Life • “Partakers of Christ” (3:14) – partakers of His perfect peace, joy, rest, & confidence. (Cf. II Peter 1:4) • “…to the end” – of our “no water” situation (cf. I Peter 1:7 & Hebrews 11:6). • “Rebellion” (3:15) – Hebrew “Meribah” (Exodus 17:7). • He just wants us to trust Him! • Not many will enter the “rest” of God. How about you?!
