  2. The Israeli Press System • According to the Reporters Without Borders 2008 index, Israel ranks as the 44th freest press in the world. • The Israeli press system most closely resembles the Western press model. • All newspapers are privately owned. • There are numerous papers, each with numerous viewpoints. • Journalists are free to criticize the government (and often do), without fear of retaliation. BUT….

  3. Threats to Press Freedom in Israel • Any messages that a military censor deems to threaten national security, public safety, or public order is censored. • All relevant messages and images must be submitted to the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) for review. • This applies to both domestic and foreign journalists. • The New York Times, AP, and other American news services abide by these rules.

  4. Other threats to press freedom • While Israel proper enjoys a fairly free press, the Israeli occupied territories (Gaza and the West Bank) have far less press freedom. • In Gaza and the West Bank, journalists have been subjected to gun fire, physical violence, arrests, and random searches. • Particularly numerous violations of press freedom occurred during the second Intifada. Well over ¾ of these offenses were perpetrated by Israel.

  5. Caroline Glick Born in Chicago, Illinois Made aliyah to Israel in 1991 and joined IDF becoming captain and Coordinator of Negotiations Received Master’s in Public Policy at Harvard Returned to Israel to work at Makor Rishon Now works as Deputy Managing Editor and writes two weekly columns for The Jerusalem Post

  6. Caroline Glick As each day passes it becomes clear that the responsibility of protecting our nations and societies from internal disintegration has passed to the hands of individuals, often working alone, who refuse to accept the degradation of their societies and so fight with the innovative tools of liberty to protect our way of life. The vigilance of just a handful of BLOGGERS brought us the knowledge of the corruption of our media and the network of global NGOs that we have come to rely on to tell us the “objective” truth (carolineglick.com)
