  4. Shale Gas Monitoring Protocol • Kits are leased (for free) to volunteer monitoring teams • Teams visit sites 1-4 times a month • Record current and recent weather, stage, and conductivity • Enter measurements into online database • 2x a year, QA/QC and certified lab testing of Ba/Sr

  5. QA/QC • Lab Providers • measure conductivity for split sample analysis • preserve samples • submit for certified lab analysis • Data Monitors • review lab split sample results and follow up with teams • inspect data from each team and stream for internal consistency

  6. Certified Lab Analysis • EPA, NYS certified for stream water analysis • Measure Barium and Strontium • Indicator for water from shale formations • Use for baseline • Grab sample if signs of a spill

  7. Baseline data – scope • 6 trainings over 2 years • 104 sentinels across 75 sites in 9 counties • 1273 individual observations

  8. Baseline data in numbers

  9. Organization • In-person trainings, summits, and group meetings • 5 regional groups with coordinators and data managers • Weekly leader calls with data and group leaders • Public education presentations and tabling

  10. Organization • PHP/MySQL database for team member, site info, and observation info • Observation info entered by monitors • Links to Google docs

  11. Organization • Google docs for protocols, meeting notes • Live shared note taking, collaborative document editing • Public vs private permissions for different information
