General Information • GATE is a 9th and 10th Grade Program • GATE is a voluntary program that provides educational opportunities that challenge and involve students. • GATE provides enrichment as opposed to mere acceleration. • GATE courses are qualitatively different. • Examples: more independent projects, more labs, more oral work, more long term assignments, more student responsibility for research assignments, more choice

  3. Identification of StudentsFirst Stage: Nomination • Purpose: • Be inclusive. • Provide equal treatment of all students at assessment stage. • Identify a pool of potential students for more detailed assessment.

Nomination Cont’d. • Nomination Process • Teacher Nomination • Parent Nomination • ALL Parent Requests for Student Nominations MUST be made to the junior high teachers in math and English • It is these teachers who will then open and submit the assessment criteria for your student from their school site • The FINAL date for these parent initiated submissions is February 24th.

  5. Second Stage: Assessment • Purpose • Develop a profile of each nominated student’s abilities. • Assessment Criteria • Objective test scores: (STAR, CST based on 7th grade) • GPA • Teacher evaluation

Assessment Cont’d. • Process • Feeder schools gather assessment criteria and submit to KHSD • Assessment information is organized and processed by the KHSD • KHSD determines those students eligible for the GATE program • CHS is sent the list of selected students • GATE coordinator and AP meet to review all candidates for eligibility to insure no eligible student is denied the opportunity for GATE

  7. Total Score = STAR + GPA + Teacher Eval (5 + 4 +4 +5 = 18)

  8. Third Stage: Notification • CHS provides the KHSD with the final list of selected eligible students. • KHSD sends letters to eligible students by then end of the current school year. • Parent permission forms are filled out and filed prior to student participation in the program.

  9. Expectations • Students should know that GATE courses are more difficult than college prep courses. • There will most likely be a larger time commitment required than college prep. Consider the student’s desire to be involved in sports and extracurricular activities. • There are special learning opportunities and rewards for GATE students.

  10. Advice from the Counselor • This is high school, not your old middle school.  Understand quickly that you must adapt to a new and tougher system. • Extra Credit does not exist—grades are based on the work you do every day in class • Late Work:  policies between teachers vary, some take late work with penalties and some take NO late work at all—KNOW the policies of your teachers and expect that they will hold you to them • In order to be competitive for college acceptance, you must consistently challenge yourself for four years of high school.  • Attendance is vital to your success.

  12. Expectations (continued) • The Centennial High GATE/Honors/AP Program is committed to the highest level of ethical standards. It is our belief that these high standards are the only guaranteed means by which students can experience the greatest personal and intellectual growth. The Centennial High program demands that the highest level of respect be given to instructors as well as to fellow classmates. Students who do not meet these standards may be counseled out of the program. • Specific guidelines for the Honor Code are available from your teachers in the fall.

  13. Typical GATE Classes 9th Grade • English 9 GATE* •   Geometry GATE* •   Biology GATE* OR Earth Science GATE •   Physical Education •   Health/Keyboarding •   Elective (Band, Choir, Art, Dance, Spanish/French 1, AVID, PLTW, etc.) *Classes will be determined based on strengths of students

  14. Typical GATE Classes: 10th Grade • English 10 GATE • Advanced Algebra GATE • AP Euro Hist. (application process and recommendation required) • Physical Education • Spanish/French 1 or 2 • Biology AP or Chemistry • (Students take CAHSEE for first time)

What happens in 11th and 12th Grade? • Students apply and are selected to participate in the Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. • Recommendations are generally based on performance in prior courses. • Students earn advanced grade points. • AP classes provide opportunities for students to obtain college credit upon enrollment in a college/university.

  16. Typical Honors/AP Classes: 11th Grade • English 11 AP • US History AP • Chemistry Honors • Math Analysis Honors • Spanish 3 Honors • French 3 Honors

  17. Typical Honors/AP Classes: 12th Grade • English 12 AP • AP Economics /AP Government or US Government Honors ( We the People ) • Calculus AP—both AB and BC • AP Statistics • AP Physics • AP Biology • Spanish 5 AP • French 4 AP

  18. What are “A-G” Requirements? • The "A to G" requirements are the entrance requirements for California's University of California and California State University systems. Entrance requirements for other university systems may vary.Grades of "C" or better are required in all College Preparatory courses • A. History/Social Studies 2 years required • B. English 4 years required • C. Mathematics 3 years required (4 years recommended) • D. Laboratory Science 2 years required (3 years recommended) • E. Language other than English 2 years required (3 years recommended) • F. Visual and Performing Arts 1 year required • G. College Preparatory Electives* 2 years required • When you see “recommended”—please think “required”

  20. Grades Vs. Test Scores Ranked in order of importance (All are very important!): • GPA/Class Rank/Course Work (Level of rigor i.e. GATE, Honors, AP) • SAT/ACT Score • Essays/Personal Statement • Counselor/Teacher recommendation • Extracurricular Activities

  21. Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC)for University of California • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. • Must be designated by the UC as being in the top 9% of their high school’s graduating class—UC promises a place for these students • Bottom line: GPA matters
