  1. Roger von Oech has identified 10 mental blocks to creativity The following information is taken from his book

  2. Mental Blocks • The right answer • That’s not logical • Follow the rules • Be practical • Play is frivolous • That’s not my area • Don’t be foolish • Avoid ambiguity • To err is wrong • I’m not creative

  3. 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, ?? What comes next? What have you done?

  4. Follow the rules Creative thinking may mean breaking out of one pattern in order to create a new one. An effective creative thinking strategy is to play the revolutionary and challenge the rules.

  5. Interesting example In 333 B.C., Alexander arrived in Gordium to take up winter quarters. While there, he hears about the legend surrounding the famous “Gordian Knot.” Whoever is able to untie this knot, will become the ruler of Asia.

  6. Interesting example He attempts to untie it but fails and gets frustrated. So he pulls out his sword and slices the knot in half. Asia is his!

  7. More examples • With his postulation that the earth circles the sun, the Polish astronomer, Copernicus, broke the rule that the universe is anthropocentric. • With his lightning attacks of mechanized equipment the German general Ernst Rommel broke the rules on how to fight a battle. • With his equating mass and energy as different forms of the same phenomenon, Einstein broke the rules of Newtonian physics.

  8. Follow the rules Almost every advance in art, medicine, agriculture, engineering, marketing, politics, education, and design has occurred when someone challenged the rules and tried another approach.

  9. Follow the rules • Every rule here can be challenged except this one. – a corporate motto • “If you don’t ask, ‘why this?’ often enough, somebody will ask, ‘why you?’” – Tom Hirshfield, physicist • Creative thinking may simply mean the realization that there is no particular virtue in doing things the way they have always been done. – Rudolph Flesch, educator

  10. Warning When I encourage you to challenge the rules. I’m not advocating you to do anything that’s illegal, immoral, or unethical.
