  1. Build relationships between headquarters and subsidiary(trust based); • Transmit complex messages when the information is complex and non-routine, and includes feelings and emotions and, therefore, cannot be standard form; • Enable subsidiaries to communicate between themselves (as in a transnational company)

  2. Be economical in direct and indirect costs (e.g., time) (the MNC must avoid both under-communication and over-communication); • Be appropriate – as in all communication (appropriateness, in this context, is decided by needs for control and self-management, the impact of industry and technology factors, and culture).

  3. The MNC facilitates communication by standardizing elements of its message formats. Royal Dutch Shell established a strategic planning system across its subsidiaries. This standardized the form of strategic planning, which made it easier to communicate local strategic issues across national boundaries.
