  1. Introducing the project: Improving medical student's communication skills with integrative medicine A German-Israeli medical students collaborative

  2. Background: • It is well known that good communication is associated with better patient understanding, adherence to treatment, control of symptoms, and patient satisfaction. It also has a strong effect of how physicians relate to themselves, and decreases physician burnout. Doctors are not born with excellent communication skills. Instead, they can learn and practice these skills, and be capable of modifying their communication style if there is sufficient motivation for self-awareness, self-monitoring, and training. Although medical schools teach communication skills, patient surveys have often shown that patients want better communication with their doctors. • Integrative Medicine (IM) takes into practice the best of conventional and complementary medicine. We believe that IM can expand communication skills, building upon touch therapies, Mind-Body techniques, traditional medicine (i.e. Chinese Medicine), and more.

  3. Process: • The German-Israeli Future Forum Foundation supported the coalition of IM physicians, and researchers who mentored 22 medical students from Israel and Germany to study communicational aspects of IM. The goal of this project was to develop educational modules for healthcare providers that will enrich their communication skills. • We developed four educational modules in IM based communication that are presented on this website. The educational modules highlight how the following IM themes may improve healthcare provider-patient communication: Traditional Chinese Medicine; Mind-Body medicine; Touch therapies; Mindful mindset; and Herbal Medicine • Each module is a standalone and has an introduction on its background and aims. Modules include various educational materials such as PowerPoint presentations, videos, and text. • For further details on the process see Berlinfirst/ second & Haifa meeting reports • We invite you to enhance communication with yourself and your patients with these modules. Enjoy!
