  1. Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!Text: I Cor. 13:8-13

  2. I Cor. 13:8-13 8. Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9. For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10. but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11. When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13. But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. Intro Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  3. Intro • I Cor. 13:8-13: This passage has been a source of • religious debate for centuries! • Used by some religious groups to prove the unlimited use of miraculous “spiritual gifts,” and used by others to say they have ceased and are not in use today. • Those that teach they are limitless and in use today are sometimes called “charismatics” since they appeal to emotion for justification. • (From charisma, G5486 = divine gifts – Thayer) To justify their claims Biblically they claim that spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit of the First Century are for all believers until the end of time Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  4. Intro What is this passage really saying? I Cor. 13:8: Scriptures say the spiritual gifts will cease, but the question is: When? Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  5. What Were the Spiritual Gifts? I Cor. 12:1, 4 1. Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware. 4. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. • “Spiritual” = pneumatikos (G4152): • “Emanating from the Divine Spirit, or exhibiting its effects and so its character; produced by the sole power of God Himself without natural instrumentality, supernatural.” (Thayer) • Directly from God, Distinct from the written word, Miraculous • “Gifts” = charisma (G5486): • “A divine gratuity, i.e. deliverance (from danger or passion); (specifically) a (spiritual) endowment, i.e. (subjectively) religious qualification, or (objectively) miraculous faculty: (free) gift.” (Thayer) • A gift of grace, Extraordinary powers Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  6. What Were the Spiritual Gifts? • How were they given? • The only way gifts of the Holy Spirit were passed on was by direct laying on of the apostles’ hands – Acts 8:14-18; 19:6; Rom. 1:11; II Tim. 1:5-6 There were many manifestations of one Spirit – I Cor. 12:4, 7-11 The gifts were bestowed by the apostles’ hands and served a purpose! Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  7. Have Spiritual Gifts Fulfilled Their Purpose? • Reveal the truth • Spiritual gifts were to reveal truth – Jn. 16:13; I Cor. 14:6 • All truth has been revealed – Gal. 1:6-9; Jude 3 Jude 3 3. Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. The purpose of revealing truth has been fulfilled! Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  8. Have Spiritual Gifts Fulfilled Their Purpose? • Confirm the word • Spiritual gifts were to confirm the Word – Mk. 16:17-20 • The Word has been confirmed – Heb. 2:1-4 Heb. 2:1-4 1. For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. 2. For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, 3. how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4. God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will. The purpose of confirming the Word has been fulfilled! Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  9. Have Spiritual Gifts Fulfilled Their Purpose? • Edify the church • Spiritual gifts were to edify in absence of written word – I Cor. 14:12-13, 26 • The written word now completely edifies us – Acts 20:32; II Tim. 3:16-17 Acts 20:32 32. "And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. The purpose of edification has been fulfilled! Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  10. Have Spiritual Gifts Fulfilled Their Purpose? Reveal the Truth Confirm the Word Edify the Church Spiritual gifts have fulfilled all three reasons for which they were given! Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  11. Scriptures Reveal Spiritual Gifts Will Cease I Cor. 13:8: Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. • Explicitly states there will be a time when they will “be • done away,” “cease” (NAS); “fail,” “cease,” “vanish” (KJV, • NKJV) – all will “pass away” (ESV) • Prophecy, tongues, and knowledge all relate to the same thing: Divine revelation from God for our benefit – G5486 charisma: divine gifts! When will they be “done away?” Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  12. Scriptures Reveal Spiritual Gifts Will Cease I Cor. 13:9: For we know in part and we prophesy in part; • “In part” is defined: tongues, prophecy, & gift of • knowledge (13:8) • “In part” and “when the perfect comes” (13:10) relate to each other and so refer to each other. • These were spiritual gifts that God used to reveal & confirm His word. “Know/prophesy in part” speaks of receiving divine revelation from God – God’s word (will for mankind) Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  13. Scriptures Reveal Spiritual Gifts Will Cease I Cor. 13:10: but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. “When the perfect comes” = when the gifts will cease It is the definition of “the perfect” that separates truth from fiction • “Perfect” = teleios (G5046): • “Complete, (growth, mental and moral character, etc); completeness: of full age, mature man, perfect.” Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  14. Scriptures Reveal Spiritual Gifts Will Cease I Cor. 13:10: but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. • Many teach “the perfect” is Christ – Cease at 2nd Coming • KJV/NKJV: “When that which is perfect comes”: Jesus never referred to as a “THAT.” • Never referred to as “The Perfect” (NASB). The “perfect,” or complete, would have to be the same nature as the “partial” Slice (partial) of pie is from the whole (perfect) pie Context says “the perfect” is the completed, revealed word of God! Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  15. Scriptures Reveal Spiritual Gifts Will Cease I Cor. 13:11: When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. Paul uses analogy of a child growing into a man He compares partial knowledge to childish things – children need help to grow! Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  16. Scriptures Reveal Spiritual Gifts Will Cease I Cor. 13:12: For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. • The word (not Christ) is likened to a mirror in I Cor. 13:12 • & Js. 1:23-25 • “The perfect” refers to the perfectly (completed) revealed word of God that was confirmed by the spiritual gifts • Js. 1:25: “Perfect” is G5046: teleios Js. 1:23-25: 23. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24. for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. 25. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does. Jn. 20:30-31: “These are written that you may believe” Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  17. Scriptures Reveal Spiritual Gifts Will Cease I Cor. 13:13: But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. • Teaching “the perfect” is Christ’s 2nd Coming is conflicting • If this is Christ’s return, then faith & hope will continue to abide! Charismatic Position The "perfect" is Christ Doesn't fit the context Involves an insurmountable difficulty Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  18. Scriptures Reveal Spiritual Gifts Will Cease I Cor. 13:13: But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. The Truth That which is "perfect" is completed revelation of God Fits the context Involves no Scriptural, or contextual difficulty The spiritual gifts fulfilled their purpose, left behind faith and hope till Christ’s return, and love will last forever! Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  19. Conclusion • God is not the author of lies! • God is the author of truth and only truth Jn. 17:17 17. "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. Titus 1:2 2. in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago, • All those who claim to have spiritual gifts today could • not possibly be of the truth • They teach various and conflicting doctrines concerning such, and are splintered over what they are called – United Pentecostal, Assembly of God, Catholic, Calvary Chapel… • They often appeal to emotion or “feelings” to confirm their witness of such gifts in use. Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  20. Conclusion The spiritual gifts of the 1st Century were seen, heard, and edified the church! • God has given us His will and confirmed it by His signs • Now the word is complete and perfect, we no longer need any miraculous proof. • He Himself has confirmed it – Heb. 2:2-4 The Holy Spirit works today in guiding individuals to God through His word, the gospel! (II Thess. 2:14; Heb. 4:12-13: His word is active today and just as sharp, and still calls men!) Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  21. God revealed how to be saved! • Rom. 10:17: Hear the word • Jn. 3:16: Believe the word • Lk. 13:3; Acts 3:19: Repent of sins • Rom. 10:9: Confess Christ as Lord • Acts 2:38: Be baptized for forgiveness of sins • Jn. 8:31: Live faithfully Conclusion We must not go beyond what is taught! (I Cor. 4:6; II Jn. 9) The “perfect” has come, the spiritual gifts (the partial) have been fulfilled, and God’s word has been confirmed and calls for obedience today! Spiritual Gifts: Fulfilled!

  22. “What Must I Do To Be Saved?” Hear The Gospel (Jn. 5:24; Rom. 10:17) Believe In Christ (Jn. 3:16-18; Jn. 8:24) Repent Of Sins (Lk. 13:35; Acts 2:38) Confess Christ (Mt. 10:32; Rom. 10:10) Be Baptized (Mk. 16:16; Acts 22:16) Remain Faithful (Jn. 8:31; Rev. 2:10) For The Erring Saint: Repent (Acts 8:22), Confess (I Jn. 1:9), Pray (Acts 8:22)
