  1. P 2/3 Curriculum Evening Class Teacher: Taylah Ritchie

  2. Thank you for attending tonight’s curriculum evening.

  3. Overview

  4. General Information • PE is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with Mr. Papa.  • Ready, Steady Learn will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. • Please make sure all clothing items are labelled.

  5. Timings of the day • School day starts at 8:55 am • P2 finish at 2:55 pm • P3 finish at 3:20 pm • We use a visual timetable so that the children know their routine each day. • Children can keep track of their day, and lesson cards are moved off the timetable when they are complete. • Children have one break, 10.45 – 11:00. P2 lunch is from 12:00-1:00 and P3 lunch is from 12:15-1:00. • After children eat, they have time to play outside.

  6. Curriculum for Excellence • •Most P2/3 children will have achieved the Early Level in P1 and will be working on the First Level curricular experiences   and outcomes. • •We would expect the majority of children to have achieved First Level by the end of P4, although some children may progress at different stages.

What does Literacy look like in P2/3?... • Differentiated and targeted tasks suited best to the learner. • Quality lessons with Learning Intentions and Success Criteria with explicit teaching and modelling. • A balance of play-based approach and traditional styles of teaching. • Reading for enjoyment. • Reading opportunities are given daily through guided reading groups. • Teacher and student led discussions through novel studies. • Building literal and inferential comprehension through a range of verbal and written tasks.   8. Literacy Rich is the program which is followed. We are currently working on Blocks 3 and 8. • Spelling program is to follow once Block 8 is completed. • Various writing genres will be covered throughout the year. • Prompting using verbal and visual cues. • Proof reading, editing and publishing of work . What does Numeracy look like in P2/3? • Opportunities to build number sense through a hands on, practical approach with use of concrete materials such an numicon, unifix, counters etc. • Following SEAL program where students are given opportunities to engage in quality teaching and learning. • Revise and build on prior knowledge and understanding.

Health and Wellbeing/Topic/Interdisciplinary learning • Health and Wellbeing  • Building Resilience Program • Being resilient- how do we cope with challenges? • Emotional intelligence- problem solving, compromising, recognising others perspectives. • Spreading random acts of kindness.  • Topic  • The Ancient Egyptians. • Future topics are tbc. • Interdisciplinary learning: outdoor learning/science/creative arts/performing arts used accordingly to apply concepts across all curricular areas.

  12. Assessment and Reporting • Ongoing assessment and observations, which are part of literacy and numeracy schemes • Online Learning Journal observations • Wider achievement observations from home • Parents’ Evenings • Interim discussions

  13. How can you help? • Daily reading with a focus of comprehension. Lots discussions, questioning around books. Relating it to real life experiences. • Read for enjoyment. • Write a shopping list  • Keep a journal or write letters to family and friends.  • Play board games such as Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, Pictionary etc. • Follow a recipe. • Set a challenge skipping/running/swimming • Research a question together using search engines such as Google, Youtube.

Additional Information • In service days are 21st and 22nd of October. • Parent experts. • Communication- if your child is going home with another parent please ensure a note is handed to me at the beginning of the day.
