  16. http://www.howcast.com/videos/183153-How-to-Master-Online-Career-Networking#http://www.howcast.com/videos/183153-How-to-Master-Online-Career-Networking# • Social Network site for Professionals • Individuals and companies use LinkedIn for networking, job searching, hiring, company research, and connecting with affiliates, including alumni, industry, and a variety of other business related groups. • It’s Facebook but what you want employers to see

  17. LinkedIn Profile It’s an online resume with unlimited space to talk about yourself. Try to highlight: 41% of the professionals surveyed, consider volunteer work equally as valuable as paid work experience. 20% of the hiring managers made a hiring decision based on a candidate's volunteer work experience.

  18. Things to Avoid

  19. Connections • Don’t just use the generic message option, take a few moments to write something personalized. • Sending a thanks for connecting with a sales pitch is asking to be ignored. Show interest, be genuine; networking for a job is a two-way street. • Don’t be afraid to request connections, help remind people who you are in your invitation, having a large network is always a good thing.

  20. Groups • Social media is about connecting and building relationships. • Take part in discussions gets you noticed as a viable job candidate and keeps the conversation going and the sharing of information, viewpoints and knowledge. • Join IEEE RPI Student Chapter Group!

  21. How can LinkedIn get you a job? Some company career websites have “Apply with LinkedIn” plugin , which submits your profile as your application. After submitting your profile, a list of your connections at the company who may be able to provide a referral for the jobwill appear. In addition, you can manage your job submissions using the Apply with LinkedIn button when you go to your LinkedIn.com "Saved Jobs" tab to view the jobs you have applied for. www.linkedin.com/in/oliviaksell

  22. Twitter • Developing a presence on Twitter is a great way to increase your knowledge of technology, social media, marketing and your industry • Create your bio as if it's an online resume, or an introduction at a professional conference. Include a professional picture of your face, a website and an "elevator pitch" of your professional experience and interests. • Think of Twitter as a conversation at a work-based social gathering. Keep your topics educational, news related, entertaining and slightly personal.

  23. Networking on Twitter • Find former and current colleagues on Twitter. • Go to WeFollow or Twellow to find industry leaders on Twitter. • Don't be shy, if you find a post that you want to respond to. • Tweet consistently, but not constantly. • Follow trending topics and hashtags. • Ask for advice on Twitter.

  24. Creating your own website • Rent a domain • Get a web hosting service • GoDaddy • 1and1 • Bluehost • HostGator • FatCow • Tip: Many services will lure you for a cheap price. However these discounts only apply for the first year

  25. Managing your site • Use a CMS such as: • Wordpress • Drupal • Joomla • Level of configuration varies for CMS used. For example, Worpress is simpler to use but Drupal is the more flexible • http://www.forgefun.com/

  26. Don’t have the time or money to create a website, use free hosting sites or create a blog: • Weebly • Webs • Blogspot • http://www.biz.nf/ • Don’t forget to promote your LinkedIn and Resume

  27. Thank you for coming We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting
