  1. Seminar Announcement Nov. 12, Monday, 15:00pm, 国家光电实验室A-302 A Robust Perimeter Intrusion Detection System Using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors Hao Jianzhong Scientist Principal Investigator at I2R of A*STAR , Singapore Abstract Perimeter protection and intrusion detection systems and methods have become essential parts of most security and surveillance systems. From applications, such as border protection, through airport security, to equipment protection in vital plants, and so on, perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) have penetrated a significantly large number of verticals. Of the core detection technologies that are currently used in these PIDS systems; taut wire, vibration sensors, microphonic sensors, microwave sensors, seismic sensors, and so on, have been the traditional solutions. However, optical fiber-based PIDS have gained popularity, being fully passive systems that may not require power supplies or electronics in the field, and having electromagnetic field immunity. In this seminar, an Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based PIDS will be presented. This new invention offers all-weather surveillance and instantaneous reporting of intrusions on perimeter fencing of critical facilities. It also overcomes the limitations of other solutions that give low reliability of detection and very high false alarm rate. It’s performance has been verified during deployment by users like Singapore Changi airport who uses this technology as a primary defence, allowing the security forces to be deployed effectively to respond to an intrusion. Biography Hao Jianzhong, received Ph.D in Fiber Optic Sensors from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2001, and M.Eng. and B.Eng. from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1993 and 1990 respectively. She joined Yangtze Optical Fiber Communication and Industrial Group, Wuhan, China from 1993 to 1995. Later she joined Fujikura Technology Singapore, leading a team to embark design and development of hybrid optical WDM and Isolator. Currently she is a principal investigator at Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), A*STAR, Singapore. She has secured more than SGD2.7 million cash funding from various industries including a multi-million dollar project from Airbus. She has published more than 70 papers in prestigious international journals and conferences and filed four international patents in which two have been granted. Her research interests include fiber optics sensors, Bio-Photonics, sensor packaging, and system integration.
