  2. Opening • Prentice Hall Literature pg. 309 • Background: Intelligence Testing • Connecting to the Literature: Reading/Writing Connection • Brainstorm for a minute – why might someone want to fit in or be accepted? • Meet the Author: Daniel Keyes • Literature in Context: Science connection pg. 313

  3. Side note: • Why is grammar important? • But if you’re not going to be a teacher or a writer – why do you really need to know how to write a sentence or how to spell a word correctly? Isn’t that what spellcheck is for?

  4. Opening • “How Stuff Works: What Constitutes a Person’s IQ?” article • In summary… • A score between 90-110 indicates average intelligence. • IQ test are designed to measure your general ability to solve problems and understand concepts. • IQ tests measure your ability to understand ideas and not the quantity of your knowledge – learning new information does not automatically increase your IQ. • Your IQ is relatively stable no matter what education you acquire. • There is a high positive correlation between IQ and success in school and the work place; however, there are many, many cases where IQ and success do not coincide. • Famous people’s IQ

  5. Work time • Looking at page 310 – what errors in spelling and grammar do you notice? • Being reading “Flowers for Algernon” • As you read the first part of the story, you may run into difficulty trying to decipher what it is that Charlie is writing about. Use context clues and sound out the words – he is using phonetic spelling (how it sounds) • Complete the Before & After Surgery sheet as you read.

  6. Closing • What is happening so far in the story? • Why did Keyes use the style of writing and word choice that he did? How does this affect the way you read the story? • Sooo why is proper grammar important to know?
