  2. Elizabeth’s Life Elizabeth was born on December 29th, 1709 in Коломенское, Moscow. She became Empress of Russia in 1741 until she died at age 52 on January 5th 1762. Her parents were Peter I and Catherine I. On March 6th1711, she was proclaimed a Tsarevna, and ten years later on a Tsesarevna.

  3. Elizabeth’s Life Elizabeth was very intelligent. She was fluent in Italian, German, and French. She was also a very good dancer and rider. She was very charismatic and was known as the leading beauty of the Russian empire.

  4. Elizabeth’s “Rebellious” Life In May 1727, at the death of her mother, Elizabeth was 18 years old and practically independent of any authority. She took advantage of her freedom to make a lover of Alexius Shubin, a sergeant in the Semenovsky Guards. When the Dolgorukis took control of the government, she was practically banished from court. Her cousin Anna Ivanovna reigned from 1730 to 1740. After the death of her of Anna Ivanovna, Elizabeth was supposed to take the veil according to the wishes of the Regent. At this point, Elizabeth began considering the possibility to overthrow the existing government. Furthermore, Elizabeth feared to be imprisoned in a convent for the rest of her life.

  5. Power • She was chiefly responsible for establishing and maintaining the alliance of Austria, France, and Russia that almost defeated Prussia in the Seven Years' War.  • Elizabeth set a very good example for future females holding power in Europe. She became empress in 1741 by staging a palace revolution that deposed the infant emperor Ivan VI and his mother Anna Leopoldovna, who acted as regent. In 1743, Elizabeth won a historic diplomatic victory when her representative negotiated an advantageous end to the long standing dispute between Sweden and Russia.

  6. Non-Political Achievements Elizabeth established Moscow State University in 1755. She also established the Academy of Arts at St. Petersburg in 1757.
