  1. Personal Branding Introduction

  2. The Brand Called You • As an individual you are a Brand. • Personal Branding is about unearthing what is true and unique about you and letting everyone know about it (Schawbel, 2009). • As a brand, you are a ‘free agent’; you choose your career path by linking your talents and interests.

  3. Develop your personal brand • Many people see personal branding as a form of self-promotion and selfishness. In some ways it is; buy that’s not a bad thing. • Developing your brand shows the ways in which you are a valuable asset. • That is an important message to put out: to current employers, partners, future clients, and your field of interest.

  4. Quick Assignment • Partner up. Now. • With your partner – write down 3 attributes that describe yourself, and three that describe your partner. • No peeking • How do your lists compare?

  5. By learning who you are (authenticity), and working to convey that to someone else, then they will start thinking that of you.

  6. You need to approach your career in terms of differentiation (standing out in the crowd) and marketability (providing something other people want or need). • Why would someone choose your brand?

  7. So what is personal branding • Defined: personal branding describes the process by which individuals and entrepreneurs differentiate themselves by identifying and articulating their unique value proposition, whether personal or professional, and then leverage it across platforms with a consistent message and image to achieve a specific goal. • In other words: How we market ourselves to others.

  8. Authenticity • Keep it real. • Trying to sell yourself as a successful restaurant expert when you are clearly a ‘sandwich artist’ people will see through you and disregard you. • Personal branding is about sincerity.

  9. Go back to your attribute list • What three adjectives best describe you? What words do you use to define your personality? What are your top three brand attributes?

  10. For example: collaborative, resourceful, flexible, forward-thinking, risk-taking, connected, visionary, diplomatic, intuitive, precise, enterprising, ethical, genuine, accessible. My top three brand attributes (in noun form) are: • Communicator: I communicate very clearly • Visionary: I constantly envision what could be • Connector: I consistently engage with new people from deep a desire to connect with everyone I meet

  11. What Are Your Weaknesses? • Don’t dwell on your weak points, but keep them in mind so that you don’t move into a position where that function is the main thrust of the job. What are your weaknesses? Example: My weakness is perfectionism. I spend a lot of time making sure things sound exactly right. Sometimes, too much time.

  12. For Next class • You must be able to clearly articulate the top three attributes of your personal brand and the biggest weakness your brand must address/overcome • Think about your interests. What attributes do you have that would be a good fit with your interests?
