How to Overcome Unemployment for Military Veterans in Australia?

Veterans are likely to possess certain skills from their service in the Defence Force, and this should improve their chance of getting hired after they discharge. However, most of them have difficulty in finding a job. In some cases, they get entry-level jobs or become underemployed and earn less than what they used to while in service. Unemployment for military veterans is not uncommon, with the rate currently at 30.2 percent, which is over five times the national average. That means only one in three veterans in Australia are employed. The reasons for that includes discrimination, poor health or trauma (PTSD), difficulty with job searches, skills mismatch, and selection. These make it more difficult for veterans to transition back into regular society.

  1. Despite that, there are organisations working to overcome unemployment for military veterans in Australia. They work closely with veteran soldiers to help them reconnect with society. They believe that every person should have the opportunity to achieve their full potential and contribute and participate in every aspect of life. To realise their vision, they offer education and better job prospects to solve veteran unemployment issues. Veteran employment programs in Australia are among the steps to overcoming unemployment for military veterans. They are provided by non-profit organisations and their supporters to ensure that veterans can have access to training and education programs online and in the traditional classroom setting. Courses are designed and delivered with experts with job market know-how and the understanding of specific skills sets needed for employment. Besides delivering education and job opportunities to veterans, organisations are also encouraging local employers to become more aware, remove barriers to employment, and eliminate discrimination. They also help employers realise and understand that veterans are worthy of being given a chance at employment, as they are likely to outperform general populations in a wide array of skills, such as communication, critical thinking, leadership, risk management, problem-solving, and negotiations among others. A former member of the Defence Force may perform much better in program management. It may take some time to completely overcome unemployment for military veterans. But as education and training programs, as well as equal opportunities for employment continue to be available to them, we can continue to empower them and give them the chance to have a better life.
