  2. Outlines 1. Polymer industry 2. Polymerization process 3. Polypropylene 4. Recent status and technology

  3. Polymer industry Polymer industry in Indonesia Petrochemicals are chemical products derived from petroleum and other hydrocarbon sources. Polymers are substances containing a large number of structural units joined by the same type of linkage. Polymer consists of combination of monomer

  4. Polymer industry Polymer industry in Indonesia There are mainly six polymer product comodities • Polyethylene • Polypropylene • Polyvinyl chloride • Polyethylene terephthalate • Polystyrene • Polycarbonate

  5. Polymer industry Polymer industry in Indonesia Amoco Mitsui PTA Ind PT Products: Purified Teraphthalic Acid Asahimas Chemical PT Products: polyvinyl chloride Chandra Asri PT Products: LLDPE, HDPE, Polypropylene Dover Chemical PT Products: Polyvenil Acetate DOW Chemical Pacific Ltd PT Products: Polysterene Mitsubishi Chemical Indonesia PT Products: PET Resin

  7. Polymer raw materials Petroleum Hydrocarbon sources

  8. Polymerization Polymerization reaction Initiation step Propagation step Termination step

  9. Polymerization Initiation step First step reaction due to pressure and heat

  10. Polymerization Propagation step Reaction of free radical with monomer

  11. Polymerization Termination step Monomer chain aggregation

  12. Polypropylene Polypropylene basic polypropylene is a valuable polymer and is used as plastic for making pipes, ropes, fibres, etc It is manufactured by catalytic reaction in a stirred tank reactor, where Ti and aluminium halides are used as catalysts at a temperature of 60°C−70°C and a pressure of 1−2 MPa

  13. Polypropylene Petrochemical products demand in Indonesia

  19. Polypropylene Polypropylene supply and demand

  20. Polypropylene Polypropylene supply and demand

  21. Polypropylene Polypropylene recent status and technology Methanol-to-Propylene Technology two reaction steps Methanol dehydration to DME on an aluminium catalyst Transforming DME or methanol into a variety of olefins. The use of ZSM-5 catalyst yields propylene. Propylene will be processed further into polypropylene
