  1. Proposed by Björn Jonson • There is a need for a modern textbook in Nuclear/Subatomic Physics ? • Without a modern and good textbook there is a risk that teaching in our field disappears from several universities. • Can NuPECC do something? • YES! • Take the initiative to produce teaching material in our field. • A textbook could be written as individual chapters that could be sold as separate booklets.

  2. Some of the advantages with this type of teaching material would be: 1. The booklets could be updated separately when needed without writing a completely new book. In this way the material could be kept updated with the most relevant developments in the field. 2. The teachers could select from the ~20 booklets what they want for their course. Here we should be aware of the fact that several universities stop teaching nuclear physics since there is no good modern textbook. Without teaching the entire field could die. 3. The students should not be forced to buy an expensive book where the teacher maybe only uses part of the material. 4. We could get top rate scientists to write the different chapters. To write a book is a major undertaking that would take years for one author. If the work is limited to the length of a review paper it is easier to get someone to do it.

  3. A good starting point for a project like this would be f. ex. to use the text by Krane, K. Heydes book and the very nice material from the Euroschools. What one need to find is a publisher that like the idea, set up a board of editors that try to find good authors, keep the text homogenous in notations, get good figures etc.
