Space Interferometry Mission Salient Features • 3 parallel Michelson Stellar Interferometers • 10 meter baseline • Visible wavelength • Launch Vehicle: Atlas V or Delta IV ELV • Earth-trailing solar orbit • 5 year mission life with 10 year goal • SIM is a JPL, Caltech, Lockheed Martin, KSC • NGST, and SIM Science Team partnership Science Goals • Perform a search for other planetary systems by surveying 2000 nearby stars for astrometric signatures of planetary companions • Survey a sample of 200 nearby stars for orbiting planets down to terrestrial-type masses • Improve best current catalog of star positions by >100x and extend to fainter stars to allow extension of stellar knowledge to include our entire galaxy • Study dynamics and evolution of stars and star clusters in our galaxy to understand how our galaxy was formed and how it will evolve. • Calibrate luminosities of important stars and cosmological distance indicators to improve our understanding of stellar processes and to measure precise distance in the distant universe

Accomplishments Since ST#9 (1) Programmatic: • Launch vehicle changed from STS to Atlas V or Delta IV Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) June 22nd • Held technical interchange meeting with KSC mission integration team on Oct 1st & 2nd • SIM completed transition to Phase B on August 18th • System Requirements Review (SRR) completed Nov 18-20th • Level 2 Preliminary; Level 3 Draft; Level 4 Key/Driving • Navigator Program Independent Review Team (NP IRT) briefed NASA OSS Astronomy & Physics Division (APD) on Dec 10th • No significant issues • Decision made to move responsibility for Lockheed Martin (LM) effort from LM to JPL following significant phase B cost estimate increase • Collector subsystem; Metrology subsystem; Instrument Integration & Test • Transition underway now

Accomplishments Since ST#9 (2) • Updated SIM PLRA to Preliminary for SRR • Format has changed somewhat (still evolving) to make actual Level 1 requirements clearer • See PLRA for details (in ST folder on sim-lib, ‘Collection 817’) • SIM was given an $8M budget reduction in FY04 by the House Appropriations Committee (HAC) to cover a small piece of the NASA “earmarks” • Estimated impact is 1 to 1.5 month slip in SIM schedule but details of what work will slip have not yet been completed • Awarded one Grid Star RV survey contract for the northern hemisphere • Verne Smith at U of Texas using McDonald 2.1m telescope with echelle spectrograph with iodine cell • Developed a plan for non-competitive contracts to provide remaining sky coverage • Equatorial Band: Mt. Wilson Observatory 2.5m telescope with CfA/SAO portable spectrograph AFOE • Southern Hemisphere: Swiss 1.2m telescope in Chile using planet-finding instruments already in place. Also have backup options.

Accomplishments Since ST#9 (3) Technical: • Held SIMTAC #30 at JPL (Jun 26th & 27th) • Topics: LV trade; Astrometric Error Budget; Modeling updates in several areas; Tighter AACS trade study; SIM alignment; Instrument electronics design; MAM milestone #5 update • Held SIMTAC #31 at JPL (Sep 9th & 10th) • Topics: AEB peer review; Grid star plan; Removal of field dependent astigmatism; MAM latest results; TOM 1c status; Spacecraft slew and settle; and Dynamics & control requirements & verification • Met HQ Milestone #6, Narrow Angle Goal Performance • SIMTAC and NP-IRT concurred with achievement of 20 pm against goal performance of 24 pm needed for 1 uas narrow angle astrometry • Requirements and design reviews held for Brassboards needed for technology milestone #8

T R2 T R3 T R4 T R5 T R2 S S S S S S S S S …. time 30 s R3 R4 R2 T R5 -0.5degree 0 +0.5degree Field position Milestone#6: MAM Narrow Angle Results • Results Benchmark capability of the MAM single baseline interferometer, used as the SIMscience interferometer sensor would be used in the narrow angle (1 deg field of regard) planet finding deep-search mode, to perform at the ‘goal’ level (24 pm) needed for 1 uas astrometry. • The project will continue investigating reasons for the data dispersion (resulting in the large standard deviation) as part of continuing Milestone #7 activities • Overall SIM Narrow Angle Astrometry performance predict is currently 1.2 uas vs 1.0 uas goal

Accomplishments Since ST#9 (4) Other: • (N) Held (June 18) “Fireside Chat” on SIM Science with OSS AA • SIM contributions to astrophysics beyond planet finding • (N) Gave a SIM status briefing to the Origins Subcommittee on July 1st • Covered project status and SIM contributions to astrophysics beyond planet finding • Concept for a large number (~20k) of medium accuracy (~50 uas) astrometry measurements in a guest observer like role was well received • The 27th SIM Newsletter “Fringes” was published Jun 6th announcing and explaining the completion of NASA HQ milestone #5, MAM wide angle basic performance (needed for 30 uas wide angle astrometry) • The 28th SIM Newsletter “Fringes” was published Jun 20th, announcing SIM’s completion of the major reviews required for Phase B entry (actual Phase B start was August 18th)

Near Term Plans • AAS Atlanta, GA meeting Jan 4th through 8th • Special session on SIM GO program • SIM cost to complete update planned for Jan through March • Delayed to Feb through April due to waiting for expected budget changes in the President’s budget to be released in late January • SIMTAC #32 meeting Jan 14th & 15th to set evaluation criteria for meeting HQ milestone #8 (due Feb 2004) • SIMTAC #33 meeting (TBD, March?) to review results of HQ technology milestone #7, MAM wide angle goal performance that is due in Feb 2003

Manager’s Assessment • SIM continues to make good progress towards technology completion • All four milestones needed for Phase B entry are now complete • First two of four Phase C/D milestones completed (MAM Wide Angle Baseline Performance & MAM Narrow Angle Goal Performance) • SIM completed transition to Phase B on schedule • SIM System Requirements Review (SRR) completed in Nov, 2003 on schedule • SIM is holding schedule so far, although budget changes from above may impact that soon
