National Conference for Kharif Campaign 2015 - Group II: Promotion of Pulse through Inter-cropping in Kharif Season

This conference aims to promote inter-cropping of pulses in the Kharif season, with participating states Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. The conference will address issues such as identifying suitable crop combinations, availability of quality seeds, agronomy, mechanization, and more. Strategies and interventions will be discussed to boost productivity and yield data recording in inter-cropping systems.

MAJOR INTERCROPPING SYSTEMS • Redgram + Greengram/blackgram/small millets 1:7 • Redgram + Groundnut 1:4, 1:7, 1:9, 1: 11 • Redgram + Cotton 1:7, 1:9, 1: 12 • Redgarm + Major millets 1:2 • Redgram + mesta 1: 4, 1:7 • Redgram + Soybean 1: 2, 1:4, 1:7 • Redgram + Ginger/ Turmeric/ Rice • Redgram + Castor/ Cowpea • Greengram + Cotton 1:1 • Greengram + Sunflower 6:2 • Greengram/ Urad + Sugarcan • Uradbean + Cotton • Uradbean + Millets • Uradbean + Sesame

Issues • TRADITIONAL WISDOM……RESEARCH • Areas fit for potential inter cropping have to be identified • Suitable crop combinations are to be worked out • Appropriate varieties of main and inter crop for better synchronization may done • Non availability of quality seeds • GAP for various situations: Agronomy, Biotic and Abiotic stresses • Mechanization: Seed Drill,Harvester etc • Non standardized technology • PHM • Procurement • Yield data recording

  5. STAGNATION ….Why? • Differential Impact of Technology • Low Productivity • Technology packages for various situations not available • -Rainfed • -Ghats and • -Hill regions • -Uplands • Rice bunds • Varietal breakthrough

STRATEGIES • Identify region specific intercropping systems in the states • Development of Package of Practices with the help of ICAR/ SAUs • Identification & making available critical inputs & essential technologies • Capacity building of farmers/ FPOs/ FPCs, ext. • functionaries/ para ext. workers • Convergence of diff. central/ state govt. schemes/ missions • Organisation of FLDs / Demonstrations on large scale • Proper assessment of yields from intercropped area • Impact evaluation

INTERVENTIONS • Making available seeds of improved/ hybrid varieties suitable for intercropping systems • Providing Composite minikits (Major + Intercrop) • Use of Broad Bed Furrow (BBF) Planter for sowing • Soil Health Card (SHC) based nutrition management • Use of fungicide/ trichoderma for seed treatment • Use of IPM technologies suitable for both crops • Popularisation of intercropping thr’ print & electronic media and publicity material
