    1. One World… Many Voices Thank you for joining me tonight to talk about how we can share our common experiences to build a lasting legacy for many impoverished children around the world. We are here because we care about the future of our world and the future of our children, but we cannot begin to help without understanding the magnitude of the cycle of poverty and its effects on our children. Thank you for joining me tonight to talk about how we can share our common experiences to build a lasting legacy for many impoverished children around the world. We are here because we care about the future of our world and the future of our children, but we cannot begin to help without understanding the magnitude of the cycle of poverty and its effects on our children.

    2. State of the World’s Children What is the state of the World’s Children? According to the World Bank, one billion children live in poverty. That means that their families earn less than 2 dollars a day. One of every 12 children die before they reach 5 years of age, mostly from preventable causes. 3.4 million people die annually from a lack of clean drinking water. 3. Poverty Robs Children Poverty robs children of a carefree childhood and opportunities for the future. Every child is filled with the miracle of possibility. However, for a child born to poverty, the harsh reality of daily life slowly chips away at their hopes and dreams. Many boys and girls are forced to quit school at an early age to help support the family, or marry and have children at an early age. They struggle with inhospitable surroundings, inadequate health care systems and unsupported educational institutions. We can no longer turn our heads to children who need help. Children need someone who cares. Someone who can help them break the grip of poverty. Through Children International’s signature program, I have been able to help my sponsored child to know what a brighter future looks like.Poverty robs children of a carefree childhood and opportunities for the future. 4. Who is Children International? Who is Children International? They are my personal charity. They were established in 1936 in Kansas City, Missouri. Since then Children International has been a voice of hope for the world’s most needy children. Born into a world where their needs go unmet, their rights are often ignored, and their opportunities are drastically limited, the children of poverty rarely have anyone who will speak out on their behalf. Children International continues to be a champion by helping the most needy children. Through medical care, educational assistance, and basic human dignity, Children International takes pride in making a long-term, meaningful impact on the children in the communities where they work. 5. Raise Our Voices in Unity! Why Are We Here? We are here to raise our voices in unity against poverty! Our strength lies in our ability to be the link between caring people who have the desire to help but aren’t quite sure how to help. Let Children International be our eyes and ears on the ground in impoverished countries – identifying problems and seeking solutions that you can provide for needy children. In other words, Children International can help you help children. Why Are We Here? We are here to raise our voices in unity against poverty! 6. Lift Children Beyond Poverty Through Children International, our voices will achieve a harmony – that melody will enable us to lift children beyond poverty. We can achieve a harmony of real help, real hope and measure progress in impoverished communities around the world. 7. Provide Real Help, Real Hope By providing real help and real hope to children living in dire poverty, we are able to encourage them that there is a better life. The real hope is that they have the self-esteem to stay in school longer and work hard to make themselves feel they have something special to offer the world. They do!By providing real help and real hope to children living in dire poverty, we are able to encourage them that there is a better life. 8. Success is… 80% of the sponsorship program graduates have career plans. More than half of the graduates are still in school. 95% of the graduates leave with job skills. How do we measure success. It is measured in life-changing outcomes. The early childhood intervention that sponsorship provides leads to healthier, happier children. The ultimate proof of success are the self-reliant youth graduating from the program. 80% of the program graduates have career plans. 9. Providing Real Help, Real Hope How do we provide real help and real hope in the future? Compelled by the growing needs of impoverished children, Children International is committed to growing their sponsored family to 400,000 children by the year 2011. They need more sponsors. And to support their growth, Children International needs to build more Community Centers in the barrios and villages where there are, sadly enough, more poor children who need help. 10. Children International Community Centers Why is a community center important to impoverished children? As children, families and entire communities wrestle with overwhelming poverty, a Community Center becomes an oasis in a desert of poverty. It is where sponsored children and their families can go for help…and hope. At capacity, new Community Centers can serve 5,000 or more children. 11. Heart of the Community Receive Tangible Support Clothing, Shoes, School Uniforms Practical Christmas, Easter and Birthday Gifts Safe Haven for Children and Teens Youth Program Support and Activities Community meeting space Playground Along with the heart of the community, comes the center of sponsorship activity. The community center is where sponsored children come to receive their benefits – perhaps a new pair of shoes or school supplies – or gifts like a birthday or holiday gift. No matter the type of benefits, the community center is a place to escape the hopelessness of gangs, drugs, and violence – the trappings of poverty. The community center is a safe haven for children trying to escape poverty’s tight grip. 12. Health Care Regular Check-ups, Medicine Dental Care Cleaning and Treatment Malnutrition Screenings Nutritional Support Nutrition Education Library Family Aid and Support Benefits and Services For certain, the community center houses the medical and dental clinics where sponsored children come for their annual check-ups. After a visit to the doctor, some children and their parents receive nutritional care, badly needed supplements and nutrition education. The community center also provides a library or computer lab for children who hunger to learn. Most importantly, the community center allows sponsored children and their families a meeting room where they may attend classes on communications, domestic violence or health issues. 13. Enrich More Lives Youth Health Corps Volunteer Mothers Sponsor Visits to the Field At the heart of benefits comes the ability to help people help themselves. Children International’s philosophy enables the sponsored child and his families to become “agents of change” and take ownership in their future. Through programs like the Youth Health Corps, teens teach younger students about hygiene and ways to lead healthy lifestyles. Often times, recipients are more than happy to give something back. More than 12,000 volunteer mothers give their time and energy to make Children International’s programs successful. Many mothers, working with local staff, help distribute benefits and are the backbone of their programs. But sponsors can also be a part of their children’s lives through a visit to the field. Sponsors can meet the grateful child and family at the other end of their letters. It is often a challenge to determine who is affected more by sponsorship – the child or the sponsor. At the heart of benefits comes the ability to help people help themselves. 18. How Do We Work Together? Invite Others to Sponsor Schedule a Friends Meeting Encourage Sponsors to Join Friends Group How do we do it? We work together. The goal is to help Children International reach 400,000 impoverished children, and sponsors are the key to attaining that goal. We can help find more sponsors and we can work together to raise the funds to help build a new community center. Before we continue any further, invite others to sponsor a child. You can provide them with applications they can mail to Children International or you can direct them to www.children.org. Then, we should agree on a date and place for a first Friends Meeting. Finally, encourage other sponsors to join your Friends Group. At the next meeting, we can discuss as a Friends Group of (insert your city/town) our goal to (recruit more sponsors or raise funds). By setting our goal and striving to achieve it, we can make a difference in the lives of impoverished children. We can help give them the light of hope for a brighter future.
