  2. Advertising Defined • According to Dictionary.com advertising is defined as, “the act or practice of calling public attention to one's product, service, need, etc., esp. by paid announcements in newspapers and magazines, over radio or television, on billboards, etc.”

  3. Advertising Majors • “The Bachelor or Science degree in Advertising combines journalism with substantial coursework in business to prepare students for careers in the field of advertising. Students must complete the following major requirements in addition to the Liberal Education Requirements for graduation.”

  5. Timeline before Computers • 1841 - Volney B. Palmer opens the first American advertising agency, in Philadelphia. • 1851 -Benjamin Bratt is the first to manufacture and mass-market soap in bar form. • 1860s - Advertising begins to appear in nationally distributed monthly magazines • 1878 - The American Cereal Co. introduces Quaker Oats as the first mass-marketed breakfast food. • 1870s - $1 million dollars is spent annually advertising Lydia Pinkham's Pink Pills.

  6. Timeline Continued • 1901 - Coca-Cola advertising budget is $100,000. • 1908 - Truman A. DeWeese begins one of the earliest books on advertising principles by assessing the relationship between advertising, manufacturers, and middlemen. • 1914 - The Federal Trade Commission is established. • 1917 - To support recruiting efforts and promote sales of war bonds and stamps during World War I, thousands of advertisers feature war themes in their campaigns while the media contribute space. By 1919, contributions total $2.5 billion.

  7. Advertising Today • Computers are not only used to do simple things such as word processing and creating e-mails but are used in the advertising field in many was. • Including: • Creating websites • E-mail blast marketing • Using programs such as Adobe to create ads and ad campaigns

  8. Impacts of Computers • Computers have generally made communication in the business world easier. • In Advertising and Public Relations communication is a key factor that must be kept with the management of the company the advertising agency is working for.

  9. How computers are useful • Budget saving in these key areas: • Blast emails are an easy and cost efficient way to target the business oriented audience. • Many designs can be done in-house instead of outsourcing projects if you have an advertising department in your company.

  10. Podcasting and Blogging in Advertising • Podcasting and Blogging are becoming more efficient ways for the computer savy businesses to either advertise a new product or to spread the word about a certain product or service. • They can also be effective to help in employee relations by having the company newsletter or even a place for employees to give other ideas on how to improve the company.
