  2. What pupils study in S1 • Wallace and Bruce – The Wars of Independence -History • Mapping Skills and Raging Rivers - Geography • Doing Democracy and Human rights and wrongs – Modern studies

  3. What pupils study in S2 • Early Settlers - History • Native Americans and the Wild west -History • The civil rights movement in America -Modern studies and History • Rich world /Poor world - Geography and Modern studies • Ice Age - geography • Hazards and Disaster Management - geography

  4. What pupils study in S3 • The Industrial Revolution – History (elements of Geography) • Why bother what's the vote worth? - History • Climate Chaos – Geography / modern studies • Who looks after granny? – geography (elements of modern studies and History)

  5. Core skills • The purpose of the broad general education in the Social Subjects faculty is to embed the core skills essential for progression into any of the discreet Social Subjects in the senior phase (Geography, History, and Modern Studies)

  8. National 4 course • Geography • The National 4 course is based on three core units. Pupils need to know briefly information about the following; • Physical landscapes – Looking at how the land shapes the earth – rivers, glaciation, the weather and how the land is used • Human Landscapes – Looking at how we study populations and urban environments • Global Issues – We will study 2 core areas that compliment the human and physical topics and go into deeper detail of current events and issues. (Hazards and development, health and tourism)

  9. National 4 assessment • The National 4 qualification is assessed internally in school. There are 4 areas that pupils will need to show understanding in. • 3 unit assessments for; • Physical environments • Human environments • Global issues • A value added unit – the is a project based on fieldwork and gathering and processing techniques and skills – pupils will all complete this at the end of S3

  10. National 5 course • Geography • The National 5 course is based on three core units. Pupils need to know in detail information about the following; • Physical landscapes – Looking at how the land shapes the earth – rivers, glaciation, the weather and how the land is used • Human Landscapes – Looking at how we study populations and urban environments • Global Issues – We will study 2 core areas that compliment the human and physical topics and go into deeper detail of current events and issues. (Hazards and evelopment, health and tourism)

National 5 assessment • The National 5 qualification is assessed both internally and externally through an exam. • 3 unit assessments for; • Physical environments • Human environments • Global issues • The exam • Pupils will be assessed at the end of the session on each of the above three units. • Pupils will also have to complete a separate assignment paper based on field work practices.

  13. National 4 course • History • The National 4 course is based on three core units. Pupils need to know brief information about the following; • The Atlantic Slave trade: 1770-1807 Looking at the reasons for the transportation of African slaves and the Abolition of the slave trade. • Scotland and the Great War– Looking at how civilians and soldiers were affected by World War One. • Hitler and Nazi Germany:1918-1939 – We will study the rise of the Nazis in Weimar Germany and life within the Nazi state.

  14. National 4 assessment The National 4 qualification is assessed internally in school. There are 4 areas that pupils will need to show understanding in. • 3 unit assessments for; • The Atlantic Slave Trade • Scotland and the Great War • Hitler and Nazi Germany • A value added unit – this is a project based on application of Knowledge and Understanding and the use of skills – pupils will all complete this at the end of S3

Pupils need to know briefly information about the following; • Democracy in the UK –Learners will develop an understanding of democracy in the UK. Looking at representation, who participates, election campaigns and influential groups. • Social Issues in the UK– Looking at crime and the law including causes of crime, impact of crime and the justice system in Scotland. • International Issues and World Power– A G20 member as an example of a world power. Pupils define the content and take a lead role in the precise content.

There are 4 areas that pupils will need to show understanding in. • 3 unit assessments for; • Democracy in the UK. • International Issues and World Power. • Social Issues in the UK. • A value added unit – the is a project based on a survey and the findings.

  20. National 5 course • The National 5 course is based on three core units. Pupils need to know in detail information about the following; • Democracy in the UK –Learners will develop an understanding of democracy in the UK. Looking at representation, who participates, election campaigns and influential groups. • Social Issues in the UK– Looking at crime and the law including causes of crime, impact of crime and the justice system in Scotland. • International Issues and World Power– A G20 member as an example of a world power. Pupils define the content and take a lead role in the precise content.

The topic will be decided by the pupils from a choice provided by the Modern Studies department.
