Purchasing Toward Energy andEnvironmental Sustainability Taking Action: Long Term Vision of the Waste Team • Reduce and ultimately eliminate waste streams on campus with the ultimate goal of a net zero waste campus through implementing “cradle to cradle” processes and practices. • Chapter 18.5 of the State Integrated Waste Management time table of: • A 50% reduction of our waste by 2008 (already at almost 54%) • A 75% reduction of all our waste by 2012 • A 100% reduction by 2020 Campus Sustainability Plan - Waste Mo Lovegreen 10/22/07

Changing Impacts to the Plan • In compliance with Chapter 18.5 of the California Integrated Waste Management time table, Mary Ann Hopkins is in the process of implementing some major changes in the near future to help us attain these goals • Implementation of techno trash • "Reading through Recycling" that ships books to prisons

Changing Impacts to the Plan • Need to reassess what the impacts are of Chancellor Yang signing on to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC): • Initiate two or more of the following tangible actions to reduce greenhouse gases while the more comprehensive plan is being developed. • a. Establish a policy that all new campus construction will be built to at least the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver standard or equivalent. • b. Adopt an energy-efficient appliance purchasing policy requiring purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products in all areas for which such ratings exist. • c. Establish a policy of offsetting all greenhouse gas emissions generated by air travel paid for by our institution. • d. Encourage use of and provide access to public transportation for all faculty, staff, students and visitors at our institution

Changing Impacts to the Plan • Need to reassess what the impacts are of Chancellor Yang signing on to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC): • Initiate two or more of the following tangible actions to reduce greenhouse gases while the more comprehensive plan is being developed. • e. Within one year of signing this document, begin purchasing or producing at least 15% of our institution’s electricity consumption from renewable sources. • f. Establish a policy or a committee that supports climate and sustainability shareholder proposals at companies where our institution's endowment is invested. • g. Participate in the Waste Minimization component of the national RecycleMania competition, and adopt 3 or more associated measures to reduce waste.

Changing Impacts to the Plan • Need to assess any changes/protocols being recommended by the UC Sustainability Steering Committee (Recycling and Waste Reduction Working Group, the Climate Change Working Group, or the Sustainable Transportation Working Group) that would impact our short, intermediate, or long-term goals

Purchasing Toward Energy andEnvironmental Sustainability Current Practices: • Recycling Program- currently consists of a partnership between building occupants, Physical Facilities Recycling Program, and Associated Students Recycling. • Annual waste audits and on-going measurement and verification • Campus green awards • Outreach to local grade schools and colleges • Bicycle pick-up and transportation of recycled goods from clusters • Small e-waste collection bins • Wood pallet collection/reuse/recycling program Campus Sustainability Plan - Waste Mo Lovegreen 10/22/07

Purchasing Toward Energy andEnvironmental Sustainability • At ground level, there are : • 73 AS recycling clusters (bertha’s) • 44 recycling dumpsters for office pack • 14 recycling dumpsters for glass/newsprint/aluminum/ plastic • 38 recycling dumpsters for cardboard • 1 super pack dumpster for recycling books and magazines • 1 40-yard roll-off for recycling metals and a collection site for shipping pallet drop-off, pick-up, and reuse Campus Sustainability Plan - Waste Mo Lovegreen 10/22/07

Purchasing Toward Energy andEnvironmental Sustainability • Current successful practices H&RS: • Recycle all dormitory and office solid waste • The dining commons recycles or composts used cooking grease, vegetable prep material from the dining commons, and coffee grounds • At year’s end and during renovations furniture mattresses, construction and demolition material, asphalt, concrete, packaging material, fluorescent light bulbs, ballasts, and all hazardous waste are sorted and recycled appropriately. • Hold a “Waste Awareness Week” campaign Campus Sustainability Plan - Waste Mo Lovegreen 10/22/07

Purchasing Toward Energy andEnvironmental Sustainability • Current successful practices DCS: • Construction Waste Management Plan- • This plan required the contractor to sort all recyclables, retain soil on site and protect trees, cover construction material and provide storm water filtration to keep particulates from exiting the site. Purchasing Toward Energy andEnvironmental Sustainability • Current successful practices Grounds: • All green waste is considered a viable commodity by the University, and our commitment is to ensure that whatever is taken from the land is eventually returned to the land via the most practical and environmentally friendly methods possible. • Grass-cycling • Local chipping and mulching • Provide green waste/mulch for the local community • Current practices have the campus moving away from non- environmentally friendly products • They have phased-out the use of most harmful pesticides and now use mainly bio-rational herbicides Campus Sustainability Plan - Waste Mo Lovegreen 10/22/07

Short-Term Goals (0-1 years) • Characterize the waste on the UCSB campus • Work with Procurement team on printed material (catalogs received) reduction of 50%) • Determine current regulatory framework • Prior to completing #1e above, evaluate the waste stream with regard to the parameters of the Natural Step system (four system conditions: 1) not to systematically increase concentrations of substances extracted from Earth’s crust, 2) not to systematically increase concentrations of substances produced by society, 3) not to systematically increase degradation by physical means, and 4) ensure that people are not subject to conditions that systematically undermine their capacity to meet their needs) • Work with Grounds Team to assist them with improving practices on green waste • Work with AS and all campus departments on campus education • At the end of year one, re-measure and evaluate the waste-stream data

Intermediate Goals (1-5 years) • Assess items yet to be completed in 0-1 year goals, create project time-line to complete the list • Update the UCSB Waste Management Plan • Work with Physical Facilities, H&RS, EH&S and Water Team to craft short- and long-term plan for improving the quality of storm water/waste water/sea water systems • GHG-Study and implement campus emissions and craft short- and long-term plan for implementing reductions air pollution (set target reductions) • Hire consultant to study waste heat recovery and implement recommendations • Laboratory Protocols-Working with EH&S and LABRATS • Working with the Procurement Team implement changes in systemwide agreements

Long-Term Goals (5-10 & 10-20yrs) • Extend chilled water loops to all campus buildings (to decrease quantity of wastewater) • Continue work on emissions reductions • Implement clean fuel strategies for generators • Work with Transportation Services for clean/alt fuel fleet implementation • Waste heat recovery implementation • Implement findings from #2 above in new construction protocols • Continue work in microchemistry implementation • Continue work on storm water quality plan (all water leaving campus site should be pollutant free) • Continue work with Food Team on full implementation program to reduce food waste by 50% (50-10 yrs) and 80% (10-20 yrs), 100% (20-25 yrs) Updated to meet Integrated Waste Management Targets of 100T by 2020 • Help create new industries (profitable way of dealing with our waste)

Long-Term Goals (5-10 & 10-20yrs) • (5-10 yrs) 50% reduction in total weight (per capita) of campus waste Updated to be 50% reduction by 2008 • (5-10 yrs) Identify and remove or replace the worst (most environmentally problematic) waste leaving campus • Study ways to eliminate balance of waste from the campus – create implementation plan • (10-15 yrs) 80% reduction in total weight (per capita) of campus waste Updated to be 75% reduction by 2012 • (20-25 yrs) 95% reduction of total weight of campus waste • (25-30 years) 100% reduction of total weight of campus weight Updated to be 100% reduction by 2020
