  1. Remote Sensing Evapotranspiration Project (RSET) Matt Funk, Ted Sammis NMSU

  2. Mission and goals • Develop a low-cost, automated tool for evapotranspiration calculation based on Modis Satellite data • Easy access and ease of use • Provide output data in easy to use format(s) (example: Google Earth overlay) • Applications: • Regional water resource management • Evapotranspiration of landscape and native vegetationEarly fire warning system

  3. Modis overpass coverage

  4. Similar analysis tools

  5. Sebal North America calculates Et in California weekly time step, RSET daily time step all states

  6. 2006 development of stand alone program. Currently, developing internet automated system

  7. RSET system Overview MODIS satellite data (Module: RSET_MODIS) Automatic Weather forecast data (Module: RSET_WEATHER) Web/User-Interface (Module: RSET_WEBINTERFACE) • Download MODIS data • Download forecast data User provided forecast data Date and location data RSET compute engine Climate driver file Daily ET data example ET time series example

  8. Project status

  9. Example: User interface Webinterface location: rset.nmsu.edu • Step 1/3: • Select weather data source

  10. Example: User interface Web interface location: rset.nmsu.edu • Step 2/3: • Select desired location • Select time interval

  11. Example: User interface Webinterface location: rset.nmsu.edu • Step 3/3: • Select algorithm input settings • Submit the query

  12. Retrieve Google overlay- select day and location

  13. Example: test run for Las Cruces, NM

  14. Example: test run for Las Cruces, NM negative number no good satellite data

  15. partnering • First generation RSET system: • We can run for you or you can run for yourself • We would like your feedback on the RSET system: • How useful is it to you? • How well does the system output match your real-world data?

  16. Future direction • Additional test as specific location with difference climate conditions (Texas, Tn, Calif.) • Extend capabilities to include whole United States. • Enhance or improve CGI interface ( requires more testing with end user) Currently only one graduate student in California is testing system. • Project has 1.5 years of funding for future development

  17. Contact • Matt Funk (Graduate Student and programmer) • Email: mafunk@nmsu.edu • Phone: 575-645-3239 • T. Sammis • Email: tsammis@nmsu.edu • Phone: 575-635-7042
