  3. INTRODUCTION • The main purpose for having genetically modified tomatoes is to make the tomatoes last longer. • The process of producing a GMO (genetically modified organism) used for GM Foods may involve taking DNA from one organism, modifying it in a laboratory, and then inserting it into the target organism's genome to produce new and useful traits.

  4. History of GM tomatoes Long lasting tomatoes came into the market in 1994 and were the first genetically modified food available to consumers.

  5. GM Tomatoes • A genetically modified tomato has a genetic change in every cell. • The modification may add a gene from a different specie and create a transgenic tomato plant.

  6. Examples of GM tomatoes • When a cell of a cactus is ‘fused’ with a cell of a cactus, the tomato is able to survive in very hot places with very little water. • When a cell of a tomato fuses with a cell of a penguin, it is able to survive in cold places.

  7. Advantages • GM tomatoes can remain fresh longer. • They are allowed to ripen in the sun which results to a better tasting tomato. • All the GM tomatoes can be harvested at the same time.

  8. Disadvantages • The first genetically modified tomatoes contained genes that make them resistant to antibiotics. • If these genes spread to animals or people, doctors would have difficulties fighting infectious diseases.

  9. 1. When were GM tomatoes first sold? • Tell us one of the advantages of developing GM tomatoes. • How is a GM tomato made? • What is the main purpose of having GM tomatoes?
