Opposition to President Johnson • What were Black Codes? • Laws that limited the freedom of African Americans • In what ways did Black Codes limit the freedom of African Americans? • They required them to sign work contracts and to have a job or be subject to arrest • Forbade ownership of guns and the rental of property except in cities • What were Radical Republicans’ goals for Reconstruction? • They wanted the federal government to be much more involved and the South to change much more before returning to the Union

Fourteenth Amendment • What was the purpose of the proposed Freedmen’s Bureau Bill? • It was supposed to give the Freedmen’s Bureau more powers • Why did President Johnson veto it? • He did not want Congress to pass any laws until the southern states were readmitted and represented • Why was the Civil Rights Act of 1866 created? • After Johnson vetoed the Freedmen’s Bureau Bill, Congress passed this bill to give African Americans the same legal rights as whites • What happened to President Johnson’s veto in this case? • It was overridden by Congress

Fourteenth Amendment • What rights did the Fourteenth Amendment protect? • Citizenship rights • Equal protection under the law (legal rights) • During the 1866 elections, there were two southern cities where there were two major riots. Where were these race riots? • Memphis, Tennessee • New Orleans, Louisiana
