  2. What is the organization? • World's central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical co-operation in the nuclear field • Deals with use of nuclear energy around the globe • Response to deep fears and expectations from discovery of nuclear energy

Important Documents • Agency’s genesis: Eisenhower’sAtoms for Peace address to General Assembly of UN on Dec 8, 1953 • Create international body to regulate and promote peaceful use of atomic power • Helped shape the Statute of the IAEA and 81 nations unanimously approved this • 3 pillars: (1) nuclear verification and security (2) safety (3) technology transfer

Purpose, fools • Provides Member States with scientific advice, education and training, technical documents, access to key nuclear data as well as meetings, conferences and symposia. • Works with Member States to advance nuclear science and technology, and improve awareness about its wide range of applications

Membership, suckas • Initial members: Members of United Nations or of any of the specialized agencies who signed Statute within ninety days after it opened for signature and deposited an instrument of ratification. • Other members: States, whether or not Members of the United Nations or of any of the specialized agencies, which deposit an instrument of acceptance of Statute after their membership approved by the General Conference upon the recommendation of the Board of Governors • 159 members

International Impact • World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) • Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station • IAEA believes Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons is peaceful • IAEA conducted inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities but never found evidence showing Iran’s civilian nuclear program has been diverted to nuclear weapons production
