  1. Why Family and Consumer Sciences? To prepare students for family, work and community by providing opportunities to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed to balance personal, home, family and work lives.“ National Standards for FCS Education

FACS is relevant • It applies to how the student lives now and will live in the future • How to spend my allowance/pay check wisely. • How I deal with people now will impact my ability to relate to others in multiple settings in the future • Learning how to balance school and family now will help me balance work and family later. • How I prepare and eat food will affect my health and well being for my whole life. • Learning how to connect to the community in which I live in meaningful ways.

  3. FACS is Real World • FACS uses academic skills applied to real world situations • FACS is important to the success of society. • FACS is a people oriented curriculum. • FACS is the glue that links, connects and makes sense of life.

FACS Is Value Added • Because FACS uses academic skills applied to real world situations you get twice the value for your investment. • Career Education • Interpersonal Relationships • Human Growth and Development • Consumer and Financial Literacy • Science of Foods and Nutrition • Family and Communities

Career Education • FACS provides an opportunity for student interests to connect with career interests. • Provides an introduction to Career Clusters. • FACS promotes the development of skills that are needed at home, family, school and eventually work. • The knowledge and skills needed to pursue appropriate school and career options.

  6. Interpersonal Relationships • Is a learned behavior. • FACS teaches the skills to get along. • Communication skills to reduce conflict now and in the future. • Builds team spirit, tolerance, and acceptance of others. • How I deal with people now will impact my ability to relate to others later.

  7. Human Growth and Development • Understanding the role of every family member • Understand developmental needs at every age and every stage • Students learn where they are on the continuum of life • FACS prepares students for the role of mentoring and/or parenting

  8. Consumer and Financial Literacy • FACS teaches the skills to manage individual and family resources. • Recycling and Reusing are consumer and financial literacy skills. • The management of a family’s finances is something children learn and not all children have good role models. • How I learn to manage my resources now will impact how I manage my money later.

Science of Foods and Nutrition • Part of nutrition education is not only learning how foods are put together it is learning how to put foods together. • The understanding of the difference between food needs and food wants is the first step to healthy eating. • FACS provides an opportunity to learn food preparation skills to keep nutritious foods nutritious. • How I prepare and eat food will affect my health and well being.

  10. FACS is sometimes the family that the student needs. FACS students are the family and the community leaders of the future. Encourages an appreciation of the fact that each human being contributes to the whole. Family and Communities
