  2. The Situation • Media specialists expected to teach research process and use technologies • Difficult to create unique assignments for evaluating what students learn from this research that are appropriate for meeting the needs of diverse learners • Writing works for some but not all

  3. Goal • To design an activity that allows second grade students to demonstrate their understanding of the Wampanoag while supporting each individual’s unique learning needs

  4. The Technology: Pixie • A creativity tool • “Today’s classrooms are made up of many different students with diverse learning styles and needs. Pixie provides tools for all students to demonstrate creativity and understanding. By combining their writing and supporting their ideas with pictures, original illustrations, and audio narration, students can share what they know in ways that support their learning needs.” http://www.tech4learning.com/pixie

  5. Audience • In alignment with the second grade curriculum • Can be adapted for students of other grades in the elementary school who are researching different topics and have different ability levels • Pixie easy to use, so even students as young as kindergarten can use it effectively

  6. Learning Styles • Designed to meet the needs of many different learning styles • Pixie can cater to these different needs • students can express themselves through writing or drawing to his or her own ability level to covey what they learned

  7. Why Technology? • Technology is motivational • Solely writing can become monotonous • Gives these tasks a face-lift • Pixie is just another way to captivate learners

  8. Teaching Styles • Behaviorism • Direct instructions for the steps of project • Grade = reinforcement • Constructivism • Learn through discovery • construct their own understanding of what they learned through writing and art
