  1. Monday, April 8, 2013 Anchorage Public School Upcoming Dates: Thursday, April 11th- MAPS Testing- Reading Thursday, April 11th- STEM Club from 3:15-4:15 Friday, April 26th Midterm ends May 8th- Art Fair May 14-20th KPREP May 21st- 4th Grade Field Trip May 28th Student Assembly May 29th Field Day June 3rd Last Day of School Reading/Language/Writing Students will review adverbs and then lead into prepositions this week. Our reading story in the National Geographic series is called “What’s Faster than a Speeding Cheetah?” We will focus on text features, and we will not rotate through centers due to MAPS testing. Math This week in math we will continue to perfect our skills of drawing and measuring angles.  We will also be using addition and subtraction to find the measurement of unknown angles.  For example, if a 90 degree angle is broken into two congruent angles each of the smaller angles would have to measure 45 degrees because 45 + 45 = 90.  Students typically enjoy these angle measurement lessons because it is much like solving a puzzle.  At the end of the week we will return to the topic of polygons.  We will be classifying polygons based on their properties. Our unit assessment for geometry will be next week- more information to come. Science This week students will transform electricity to magnetism by making an electromagnet. On Wednesday, students will have a chapter 13 open book and open note test. There will be 12 multiple choice questions, 2 short answer, and one open response. Beginning on Thursday, students will explore sound and light in chapter 14. Social Studies Welcome back! I was very pleased with the results of the social studies unit test.  Students will receive their tests back on Monday.  I will keep them for a pass-on portfolio entry, so I will take them back at the end of class.  We are moving on to the northeast region.  We will explore the mountains, beaches, big cities, small towns and the wealth of history and culture in the northeast. We will discuss the northeast region being characterized by the Atlantic Coastal Plain with its bays, beaches and capes, along with the Appalachian Mountains. Additionally this week, we will highlight the trade developed early on as port cities sprang up. Finally, we will learn how so many of this region's states were original colonies, and why it has such a rich historical heritage.    NEWSLETTERMs. Campbell Ms. Holt Ms. Harper Just a Reminder: Camp Invention is coming to Anchorage this summer!
