  2. The Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill 2013 The Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill 2013 On October 17th at 10:17 AM a statewide exercise for earthquake preparedness will be occurring in schools, businesses, and industry We will handle it as an informational drill in both sessions in which instructors will review the protocol with their students

  3. Duck and Cover Drills

  4. Drop, Cover, and Hold On

  5. Procedure In school: • 1. Drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy desk or table, and hold onto it firmly • 2. Be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops (if no table/desk is available, drop to the floor against the interior wall and protect your head/neck with your arms) • 3. Avoid exterior walls, windows, hanging objects, mirrors, tall furniture, large appliances, kitchen cabinets, and heavy objects/glass • 4. Do not go outside!

  6. Outside of School In Bed: • 1. Hold on and stay there. Protect head with pillow. You are less likely to be injured staying where you are. • 2. Broken glass has caused more injuries because people tried to roll on the floor or tried to get to a doorway. Wheelchair: • 1. Lock wheels in an area that is safe. If unable to move quickly, stay where you are. Cover your head/neck with arms.

  7. Outside of School Continued: Outdoors: • Move to a clear area if you can safely do so; avoid power lines, trees, signs, buildings…etc. Driving: • Pull over to the side of the road, stop, and set parking brake. Avoid overpasses, bridges, power lines, signs, and other hazards. Stay inside vehicle until shaking is over. If power lines fall on the car, stay inside until trained personnel arrive to assist.

  8. Outside of School Continued: High Rise: • Drop, cover, and hold on. Avoid windows and elevators. Sprinkler system and fire alarms may activate. Stadium/Theater: • Stay in your seat and protect head/neck with arms. Do not try to move until the shaking is over. Walk out slowly watching for falling debris from aftershocks. Living below a Dam: • Pray! • Catastrophic failure is unlikely. Refer to flood zone confirmation.
