  1. Molecular cooperativity in structural relaxation: New Insight Alexei P. Sokolov, University of Akron, DMR 0804571 Our studies reveal no direct connection between the steepness of the temperature variation of structural relaxation m (fragility) in glass forming liquids and the length scale of dynamic heterogeneity, cooperativity x. This finding contradicts to traditional views and calls for a revision of the basic concepts of the glass transition. Size of dynamic heterogeneity x vs fragility m in various glass forming systems:  -covalent and ionic glasses,  - molecular glasses;  - hydrogen bonding systems;  - polymers. L. Sokolov, University of Akron, DMR 0804571 Broader Impact: The presented finding have significant implications on our understanding of the glass transition and of the dynamics of soft materials in general. Education: Under this grant, three students, K. Kumar, S. Khodadadi and L. Hong have completed their PhD. Two undergraduate student K. Freeman and E. Scott have been actively involved in the research. Dr. Sokolov has been also actively involved in organizing Summer School in Biophysics at UT/ORNL. Students meet and discuss with leading researchers during the Summer School in Biophysics at UT/ORNL (Knoxville, 2010).
