    5. DRAFTING Putting into words and writing down; composing Last week we were drafting our animal stories.

    6. ASSURE To promise or tell positively The coach assured his team that with hard work they would win the championship.

    7. TRANSFUSION An injection of blood, usually to replace a loss due to bleeding. The woman received a blood transfusion at the hospital.

    8. CONCEAL To hide Jane was told to conceal her money in her purse.

    9. COMA A sleeplike state in which a person cannot sense or respond to light, sound or touch. The doctor could not bring Rick out of his coma.

    10. AGITATED Disturbed ; upset Mom became agitated with my mess.

    11. RIVET To fasten firmly. The child’s attention was riveted to the television.

    12. Vocabulary Handout Using your vocabulary list, complete the Vocabulary Handout Once you have completed the sheet, turn it in to your class turn in box. When you are done, turn to a new page in your Reading Locker and title it “Lob’s Girl Literary Elements.” Read/Work silently until we are ready to move on.

    14. Consider whether something good or bad is about to happen on the bus and why you think so. The bus ride from school began as it does every day. Kids were yelling and laughing, and their music was playing. Suddenly, a dark cloud passed in front of the sun. The noise continued but at a slightly lower pitch.

    15. Foreshadowing (Record in Reading Locker) Foreshadowing is the author’s use of clues to hint at what might happen later in the story. Writer’s use foreshadowing to build their reader’s expectations and to create suspense.

    16. Look for shifts in verb tenses and locate clue words such as I remember. My kitten wakes me up each morning by licking my face. I remember when I first got Merlin at the pet store. He looked so tiny, all curled up in the corner of his cage. I fell in love with him right then and there.
