  1. Steel pile day 20.05.2010 RD-PILE WALL – NEW WAY TO BUILD Lars Johansson Ramboll Sverige AB in co-operation with Juha Forsman Ramboll Finland Ay Title slide

  2. AMC – Analysis Modelling Calculation Group Bygg- konstruktion Geokonstruktion Grundvatten- Ytvatten- Dagvatten- Spill Trafik

  4. EXAMPLES OF ”TRADITIONAL” SHEET PILE WALL Content slide, two columns with image

  5. TRADITIONAL BUILDING PIT SUPPORTED BY SHEET PILE WALL pit boundary fill rock anchors sheet pile wall clay moraine • Insecure method to penetrate through rocky boulderly soil layers = contact to bedrock through moraine is often hard to achieve • Outer walls of building must have their own foundations • Basement walls cannot extend to the boundary of the excavation pit (sheet pile wall requires space) • Many support levels (struts). Steel bars/dowels are needed for anchoring of the lower end into bedrock • Problems to control ground water

  6. TRADITIONAL SOLUTION NEW, ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION plot boundary fill rock anchors clay RD-pile wall moraine bedrock

  7. ACHIEVED BENEFITS • RD-pile wall can be installed near the excavation boundary and ”in open space” in plot boundary • Distance of ground water flow increases => amount of water decreases. Water-tight structure as a whole. • Act as bearing structure (foundations, basement wall, good stiffness) • External anchoring is not allways needed (for instance upper deck acts as inside strut) • Penetration of all soil layers • Contact to bedrock is secured
