State of America’s Libraries 2011 • 65% visited a library in the last year (72% of women, 52% of men) • 93% believe free library services are important • 31% rank libraries as most important tax supported service • 2/3 report that the library helped in finding a job. 70% say the library helped to start a business

  4. Budget Cuts are a Reality • U.S. Mayors reported that staff or services at libraries are the #2 area of focus for budget reduction • 21 States report public library funding cuts • School expenditures down 9%

Technology Access • Public libraries #1 point of online access for those without home or work access • 2/3 of libraries are the only provider of free public access • Public computer and wi-fi use increased at 70% of libraries • 82% of libraries provide wi-fi • 89% of libraries provide computer training

  6. Downloadables • 200% increase in ebook checkouts • 52% increase in e-audiobook checkouts • 15 million digital titles • 6.6 billion minutes of spoken word and video • 12% of academic libraries circulated e-readers • 6% of schools circulated e-readers
