  2. The main goal of CSVV "Let your food be your remedy and not remedy your food". Hippocrates 5th century BC CSVV puts the greatest emphasis on the health benefits of vegetarianism.

  3. The goals of CSVV • collect information about health, ecological, economic and ethical benefits of vegetarianism, according to the latest scientific evidence • help vegetarians and the people who are interested in vegetarianism • educate the wider public and professionals about the benefits of vegetarianism

  4. Achieving the set goals is ensured through: • Specialised Group for Nutrition • Specialised Group for Gastronomy • Legal Group • Specialised Group for Environmental Influences of Nutrition • The School of Vegetarianism • Club Our Child Vegetarian

  5. Contribution of the Specialised Group for Nutrition: Conference for vegetarianism assesment (2000) in attendance of: • National Institute of Public Health  • Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic • Czech Pediatric Society • Office of Health, Safety and Security of the capital city Prague • The Clinic for Child and Youth Medicine, Prague, the Czech Republic • MilitaryMedical Academy, Hradec Kralove, the Czech Republic

  6. Contribution of the Specialised Group for Nutrition (2004) Translation and publishing of the largest scientific publication about vegetarianism: “The Position of the American Dietetic Association and Dieticians of Canada: Vegetarian Diets (2003)”

  7. “The Position of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) is the shield and the certificate for vegetarians

The position of the American Dietetic Association and Dieticians of Canada: „Well-planned vegetarian diets are • healthy • nutritionally adequate • provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. They are fully appropriate for: • children of all ages (from weaning) • adults • pregnant and lactating women • sportspeople.”

  9. To the Position ADA, the Specialised Group for Nutrition obtained positive statements from: Czech nutritionists from • the Society for Nutrition; and Czech pediatricians • from the Czech Pediatric Society

  10. Position of the Society for Nutrition „Position ADA on vegetarian diets can be seen as a balanced study that is based on the scientific evidence and can be easily utilised for needs of those people who decide to become vegetarian¨.“

  11. Position of the Czech Pediatric society „The statements reflected opinion of the Czechpediatric community does not differ torecommendations of the American PediatricSociety and the World Health Organisation: If a diet is correctly planned, there is not much to be said against it.”

  12. Year 2004 represents a historical change for the Czech Republic in terms of positions of professional public towards vegetarianism.

Contribution of the Specialised Group for Nutrition Protective diet „Is such type of nutrition that in its maximal possible way protects from those chronic diseases that are mainly influenced by nutrition.“ „This diet should considerably decrease the risk of diseases of civilization. It should also prevent them and be used as their successful treatment. (CSVV)

  14. Declaration of protective diet is a way how to explain to a non-vegetarian "why not to eat meat”.

Protective diet Increased animal-based product consumption is one of the key risk factors that causes • excess of:energy, proteins, fats with unsuitable compositions of fatty acidsand cholesterol; • and absence of:fibre, complex polysaccharides, antioxidants such as vitamin Cand other protective substances such as terpens or bioflavonoids.

The Specialised Group for Gastronomy • associates the heads of school dining, work and hospital canteens or restaurants that have introduced or are introducing vegetarian meals in to their institutions • organises prestige vegetarian banquets • collects recipes of vegetarian meals and puts together menus and meal plans for public dining

  18. (2000) Proposal for abolition on the government public regulation (n.48/1993 Sb.) for school dining was submitted. The contribution of the Legal group This regulation does not allow introducing meatless meals into schools.

Work of the Specialised Group for Nutrition and the Legal group Initiated young specialists to examine the nutritional levels of school dining. • They concluded that the levels are not beneficial to health; • and sent a letter to the chief of the Health, Food and Safety office of the Czech Republic (2003).

Work of the Specialised Group for Nutrition and the Legal group • The chief health officer requested the Scientific Committee for Food to solve the issue (2004). • The Specialised Group for Nutrition was also invited to take part. • The mothers from the Club Our Child Vegetarian wrote an open letter to the minister of education and the chief health officer requesting changes in school dining (2007).

  21. (2008) The minister of education established a working group for the improvement of school dining. CSVV is part of this group. This group is working on a project: “Healthy food for everyone at school who wants to live healthily“. • Aims of the project: • change of the unsuitable regulation for school dinners. • develop health beneficial meal plans and menus forschools • create a database of healthy food products • launch the project across the whole of theCzechRepublic

  22. Specialised Group for Environmental Influences of Nutrition Collects scientific information about the influences ofhuman nourishment on the environment. • translates some of the foreign studies • deals with ecological agriculture

The school of vegetarianism Activities • (2000) co-organisation of a seminar for teachers from hospitality schools in Kromeriz • (2004) preparation of a seminar "Protective diet - the choice for health", which was part of the food fair called Salima ( in cooperation with the editors of the website www.vegetarian.cz.) • (2006) participation in the Centrum of Innovative Education project for the Palacky University, Olomouc. CSVV prepared a workshop “Meal and illnesses”, which was part of the "Responsible attitude towards health" topic area.

  24. The school of vegetarianism • (2007) Co-organisation of an international conference “The health education and quality of life”, with the University of South Bohemia

Names of the presentations of the members of CSVV included: • Illness as the way towards health. • Vegetarianism as a type of protective diet. • Vegetarianism as the foundation for the sustainable development of human existence. • New view on health and illness. • The complete lifestyle as the foundation for the quality of life. • Ethicotherapy - treatment by moral powers.

  26. The school of vegetarianism offers • Lectures, which can be an introduction in to the vegetarianism: Risks and benefits of vegetarianism • Meetings of people who are interested in vegetarian nourishment • Course: Foundations of the vegetarian way of eating for primary school teachers and school chefs (currently in progress)

  29. Project: the Club Our child vegetarian (established in 2006) associates parentsthat support healthy and vegetarian diet. Their main aim is to support and promote benefits of vegetarianism.

Club Our child vegetarian The Club offers • lectures on vegetarianism for children • meetings with the name „The child vegetarian“ • retreats in order to introduce active and healthy lifestyle to parents (2007) An open letter was sent to the Ministry of Education, Youthand Sports of the Czech Republic and to thechief health officer of the Czech Republic
