  1. Keeping Control Is Often The Only Option Every pet owner knows that once you lose control over your pets, you open yourself up to all sorts of trouble, such as pets that do not respond to commands, pets that become unruly, pets that may disappear. This is cause for great concern since pets that refuse to react to commands may start to exhibit unwelcome behavior and they may indeed become a danger to themselves and others. This is true for the pet at home, but certainly also for the professional animal trainer, and also the dog handler. Many people work with dogs all day long, it not always with the same expectations and under the same circumstances. Many private individuals and pet owners, but also professional dog handlers and trainers, spend a lot of time around dogs every day. All of them would like to know that their dogs respond positively to what is expected of them. Therefore they train the dogs, or they send them to professionals whose passion training is, or who want to make sure that every dog reaches its full potential, and that the dog and owner or handler form the kind of bond that is beneficial to the both of them. For the owner of the little pet, it is important to have a well-behaved little dog – for the K-9 officer, it is important to have a dog that reacts positively to commands and other stimuli for the pair to be able to perform their task. So, specific training is needed in both cases. The small animal may respond well to only basic commands and voice training whereas this may not suffice for the police or security dog that may need a firmer hand. That is why training methods may differ, and the working dog is often trained in different circumstances where they are exposed to methods specifically designed for their size, their breed, and their temperament. They are often on a leash with a collar next to their owner or handler and will only be very rarely allowed to run or roam free. The owner sets the pace and instills in the dog the understanding that he, the owner or handler, sets the pace and tone and that the animal follows, and that the animal is expected to react to certain commands and stimuli. That is why these handlers rely so heavily on good leashes and modern collars– also technologically advanced collars that allow them to train the

This type of training is also of great benefit for the owner of the hunting dog that, at times, may run off when it stalks or gives chase after prey: a good tracker enables the handler or hunter to keep track of the dog’s movements so it will return to safety when prompted by the hunter or handler to do so. There are, therefore, great devices on the market to assist these hunters and other professionals in terms of which they remain in charge and know where their animals are so they can be sure the animals remain safe, that they do not disappear or that harm comes to them. As technology advances, it is to be expected that some of these devices will introduce great, modern features to enable the handler to remain in charge of the dogs over longer distances than in the past: therefore these are designed with wonderful features such as, say, GPS functionality. For many dog handlers – certainly also for hunters such as wing-shooters - these new devices are a great addition to their tracking and training tools for their dogs.
