Key Terms – Summative • Assessment • Summative Assessment –given at the end; used to judge the final quality and quantity of student achievement and /or the success of the instructional program (sum it up) • Assessment of learning • Examples: Kansas Math Assessment, Kansas Reading Assessment, Semester Exam, etc. Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT 4

Key Terms – Formative • Assessment • Formative Assessment – checkpoints of learning; snapshots; used to inform instruction and essential learning; periodic collection of information to provide feedback concerning progress toward achieving learning goals; provides the information needed to adjust teaching and learning while they are happening (inform along the way) • Assessment forlearning! If we want to use assessment as a tool for learning… • We must be able to answer… • What is it we want all students to learn? • How will we know when each student has mastered the essential learning? • How will we respond when a student experiences difficulty in learning? • How will we deepen the learning for students who have already mastered the essential knowledge and skills? Kansas Interim Assessment • Designed as a tool teachers may use to gauge the progress their students have made with regard to the tested indicators at their grade level. • Provides an estimate of achievement on tested indicators at three different points prior to the administration of the KS assessment Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT 18

Kansas Interim Assessment • Administered online using the KCA site • Takes one class period to administer • Designed as a multi-stage adaptive test. • Multiple choice • Each test consists of three parts • Students will receive more challenging or less challenging parts based on their responses to previous parts during the test session Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT 19

Impacting Instruction… • If a student received a 74 on the taught indicators and a 34 on the entire test…what does that mean? • Students understood most of the concepts that were taught • With regular “cyclic review” of the taught items you may not need to dig any deeper. Impacting Instruction… • However… If a student received a 44 on the taught indicators and a 34 on the entire test…what does that mean? • The student did not understand that concepts that were taught! • Use formative assessments – before/after • Specific re-teaching of indicators, “daily cyclic review” of the taught items Kansas State Department of Education ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT ASSESSMENT LITERACY PROJECT 28

Goal Setting, Test Talks… Sample goal: • I want to improve my score from a 44 to a 70 on the interim assessment given in December. • I will improve my score by asking my teacher for help on daily lessons when I don’t understand. I will do my homework. I will check over my work. Teacher, principal test talks are another way to help students understand and focus on learning needs.

Think Time…Assessment • The term assessment is derived from the Latin root assidere meaning “to sit beside” • a broad term referring to the process of gathering and synthesizing information • “Testing” is one type of assessment!
