  1. Total Cost of Ownership of Exchange 2000 • The Exchange 2000 server comes in two primary versions: the Exchange 2000 Server standard edition, which lists for $699; and the Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server, which sells for $3,999. • The Standard edition is intended for small and midsize organizations. It is considerably cheaper than the Enterprise edition. It also lacks features such as clustering. • The Enterprise edition also supports clustering when run on Windows 2000 Advanced Server. “The Total Cost of Ownership of Microsoft Exchange” October 2002. Ferris Research

  2. VERITAS Reduces the Cost of Ownership for Exchange 2000 • VERITAS Cluster Server supports advanced clustering of Exchange and only requires: • Standard Edition of Exchange • Windows 2000 Server • Any version of Exchange or Windows 2000 can be used with VERITAS Cluster Server • VERITAS delivers immediate cost saving when clustering Exchange using VERITAS Cluster Server • Reducing cost of ownership even before deploying a VERITAS High Availability Solution

  3. High Reliability and Availability • “Few if any organizations have email disaster recovery systems in place” • “Administrators must maintain high reliability and availability to control costs associated with email outages” • “Clustering improves system uptime, and allows users to perform maintenance at their discretion without having to take their system down” “The Total Cost of Ownership of Microsoft Exchange” October 2002. Ferris Research

  4. VERITAS Delivers Highly Reliable and Available Exchange • VERITAS provide the complete Solution when considering Disaster Recovery • From Recovery Point Objective (RPO) to Recovery Time Objective (RTO) • VERITAS Consulting can assistance with designing, implementing and testing Disaster Recovery plans • VERITAS helps administrators control costs associated with email outages using VERITAS Cluster Server • Controlled Planned Downtime for maintenance and administration • Automatic fail over of Exchange if an unplanned outage occurs

  5. The Future of Exchange…Microsoft Exchange Titanium • Virtual Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is an instant disk mirroring technology in Windows 2003 Server. • On initiation of a backup for a drive or partition, a virtual copy “shadow copy” is made of the drive or partition. • The backup process then works against the shadow copy. • The primary Exchange data store is left fully operational, so that Exchange keeps running. “Microsoft Exchange Titanium and Microsoft Outlook 11” October 2002. Ferris Research

  6. VERITAS Delivers the Future of Exchange Today • VERITAS Volume Manager with FlashSnap can already create shadow/mirror copies of the Exchange Database • Mirror of Exchange Database can be: • Made available for the backup process • Taken onto another host to be used as a periodic disaster recovery copy • Used for off host processing and reporting • The VERITAS functionality is available with any version of Exchange and Windows Server

  7. What benefits do customers get from Exchange Titanium? • Easier Backup and Restore. • The Virtual Shadow Copy (VSS) technology in Windows 2003 Server can be used to great advantage by Titanium. Customers will not lose access to Exchange while a backup is under way. • Data Center Server Consolidation. • The practical sizing limit of an Exchange Server has been hamstrung by the time required to back up the server, and thus have it offline. • If VSS works as promised, customers with multiple co-located Exchange Servers will be able to consolidate to a smaller number. With VSS, Exchange Server continues to operate and the backup takes place in the background. “Microsoft Exchange Titanium and Microsoft Outlook 11” October 2002. Ferris Research

  8. VERITAS Delivers these Benefits Today! • Easier Backup and Restore with VERITAS • Using VERITAS Volume Manager with FlashSnap in combination with the VERITAS Data Protection Solutions • Data Center Server Consolidation with VERITAS • Using VERITAS Data Protection Solutions customers can already realise the benefits of reduced backup windows • Customers can leverage the features of VERITAS Volume Manager to assist with Consolidation projects • Customers can leverage the features of VERITAS Cluster Server to reduced the impact of planned downtime when consolidating servers

  9. Exchange Direct Costs • Microsoft Exchange costs $8 to $20 per user per month; $13 per user per month is typical. • Exchange Server Software Prices • Exchange 2000 Server (standard) $560 price/server • Exchange 2000 Enterprise Edition $2,400 price/server • Windows 2000 Server $850 price/server • Windows 2000 Advanced Server $3,000 price/server • Software costs range from $3.1 to $6.3 per user per month (includes the cost of Exchange server software) • Major upgrades range from $45 to $125 per user (not including hardware, software and operations. • Major upgrades result in service disruption, training, consulting, and implementation costs. “The Total Cost of Ownership of Microsoft Exchange” October 2002. Ferris Research

  10. Key Metric for Exchange Servers • No. of servers managed per Exchange administrator: 1-10 (typical 4) • No. of users per Exchange administrator: 350-3,100 (typical 2,100) • No. of users per Exchange server: 150-1,700 (typical 600) “The Total Cost of Ownership of Microsoft Exchange” October 2002. Ferris Research

  11. User Productivity • Users often spend 20 to 30 percent of their work time or more with email, and downtime inevitably entails some level of disruption. “The Total Cost of Ownership of Microsoft Exchange” October 2002. Ferris Research
