  2. Getting Started: • How well do you know God and how well does He know you?

  3. God Knows and Understands! • Not only does God know you; He understands you! • Plus, he wants to hear from you. • God wants you to share the good and the bad of your life with Him.

  4. Where Are We Going? • We will read of God wanting to know about our desire for vengeance, • our suffering with guilt and grief and • need for mercy and • on Easter Sunday we will be looking at Psalm 22

  5. Questions: • How many people here really enjoy the Psalms? • How many here would prefer to read the gospels or other narratives and leave the poetry behind? • A few weeks in the Psalms will help us with our relationship with God and one another.

  6. What is a Psalm? • Song of Praise. • There are 150 of them! • They show how people related to God. • In the Psalms people speak to God. • There are 5 Books: • Psalms 1-41 • Psalms 42-72 • Psalms 73-89 • Psalms 90-106 • Psalms 107-150

  7. Psalm 139 Page 974 • PS 139:1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. • PS 139:2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. • PS 139:3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. • PS 139:4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. • How does this level of knowledge impact you? How does it make you feel?

  8. Psalm 139 Page 974 • PS 139:5 You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. • Have you felt God`s protection over you? • PS 139:6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

  9. Verses 7-10 God is Everywhere! • Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? • 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. • How does the truth that you cannot escape God impact you?

  10. Verses 11-12 • If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," 12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. • You cannot hide in physical or spiritual darkness! God knows.

  11. Verse 13 – God Knitting! • 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. • God had intent when He made you. Are you going to Him to find His intention?

  12. Verses 14-16 How We Are Made: • 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. • PS 139:15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16 your eyes saw my unformed body.

  13. The Rest of 16… • All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

  14. Verses 17 -18 • 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.

  15. Verses 19-22 • David wants to be God’s Avenger! • David knows God but he does not understand how God puts up with wicked people.

  16. Verses 19-22 • If only you would slay the wicked, O God! Away from me, you bloodthirsty men! 20 They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD, and abhor those who rise up against you? 22 I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.

  17. The Conclusion: • David concludes asking God to search him and see if this desire to avenge God is right. • God, however, does not make reply!

  18. Verses 23-24 • Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

  19. Taking It Home: • How well does God know you and how well do you know Him?

  20. God Understands: • God understands you and He wants you to share your thoughts and feelings with Him.
