  2. What? • The Trail of Tears was the relocation of five Indian tribes. • They were taken from their homes and forced to move west by the Removal Act.

  3. Who? • Five Indian tribes were affected. • The Cherokee, Creek, Seminole, Choctaw, Chickasaw.

  4. Where? • The Indians originally lived in the Appalachian valleys of Georgia and the Carolinas. • They moved to Arkansas, and then were forced west to Oklahoma.

  5. Why? • The Indians were forced to move because of the Removal Act. • Georgia and other southern states were eager to claim the Indian land, so the act was passed to solve the crisis.

  6. The Indians called it Nunna-da-ul-tsun-yi, “The place where they cried.”

  7. What would happen if a Cherokee tried to burry a dead relative? • They would be shot by a soldier.
