  1. Welcome! Please come in and find your child’s desk. Have him/her show you the books inside and how orderly his/her desk is kept. We will begin our presentation in just a few minutes.

  2. Life is Good At the Beach

  3. Being Educated Amid ship Cunningham Higgins

  4. Three “R’s” of 5th Grade

  5. Binders and Agendas Children will use these to keepthemselves organized! The agendas will contain their RAH, homework, and daily behavior grade. This is our way ofcommunicating on a daily basis. In addition you may write notes to us in their binder to save you from writing a separate note.

  6. Where is that paper? In your child’s binder there is a folder for work that has been graded and needs to be signed OR work that is unfinished and needs to be finished at home. The work we send home to be signed are grades that we wanted you to be aware of before Friday.

  7. Multiplication Facts To be successful in 5th grade it is critical that your children know their multiplication facts. They need to know them, and know them quickly. We have already begun multi-digit multiplication, and will be beginning division. If students do not know their multiplication facts they will have difficulty with 5th grade mathematical concepts. Furthermore, knowing their facts builds CONFIDENCE! SO PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! Xtramath.com can provide your student with practice.

  8. Spelling & Vocabulary We do not give nightly spelling and vocab homework. It is up to the student to study the spelling and vocab on their own each night. These are placed on our class website every Friday afternoon. On Mondays, we typically have the students make flashcards in stations. They are to have these in their binders to bring home and study EACH night. However, if we find that students are not studying on their own each week we may choose to assign nightly spelling homework.

  9. Homework! We really try to not give too much nightly homework. Students should be studying their spelling and vocab nightly, their multiplication facts nightly and reading nightly. If your student is bringing home additional work it is most likely because they are not finishing their station work. We believe we give them ample time in class to complete the assignments we give and always take a quick assessment to see how many people finished. If we find our calculations were off, we will provide time the next day to complete that assignment. Therefore if your child is bringing home station assignments that need to be completed it is possible that your child needs to improve their time management skills.

  10. Class Website Please become familiar with our class website at http://www.cunninghamandhiggins.com/ Here you will find many things that may be useful to you, like our spelling and vocabulary list, a copy of our weekly newsletter, and links to other websites that your children may find entertaining or useful.

  11. Further communication can be done by contacting the teachers. We can talk by phone, emails, or conferencing. When emailing, it is best to include both teachers on the email. Our goal is to be as thorough as possible in all aspects of your child’s education.

  12. In these folders You will find our weekly newsletter, their graded work as well as other assignments that we have completed in class. Please take time to go through these (if possible with your child) to keep up with what your child is doing at school. Friday Folders

  13. Dear Mom and Dad,I know I have grown so much already, but this year you are really going to see a lot of changes in me. Please help me to make these changes as gracefully as I can. My body is getting bigger and is starting to change a bit, and I think I might be smelling a little funny. Please make sure that I am cleaning myself properly everyday and buy me some deodorant. It would be really embarrassing for my friends tell me I stink.I Love You! Your 5th Grader

  14. Please take the time to let your child show you the following things around our classroom: • The “Warhol” Portraits, Bio Poems, and Wordles • The Scientific Method Posters • The Super Fab Vocab • Our “Dear Teacher” Letters and Our “All about Me Newspapers” (in the hallway)
