  1. National Geospatial Advisory Committee Update FGDC Steering Committee Meeting January 29, 2008

National Geospatial Advisory Committee Current Status • Committee approval package was approved/signed by DOI Secretary Kempthorne – December ‘07 • Federal Register notice announcing establishment of committee was posted on January 11, with 15-day comment period (through January 28) • NGAC Charter filed with GSA January 28, “officially” establishing Committee per FACA rules • Press Release and Appointment letters issued January 29

NGAC Review Process • Call for Nominations – Issued May 2007, due June 28, 2007 • Results – Over 100 nominations received • Interagency Review Panel evaluated nominations, made recommendations to DOI Office of the Secretary – August/September 2007 • Review Panel Members: • Nancy Blyler (USACE) • Dan Cotter (DHS) • Kari Craun (USGS) • Ivan DeLoatch (FGDC) • Randy Fusaro (DOC/Census) • Chris Niedermayer (USDA)

  4. Review Panel Criteria • Committee membership should reflect a balanced representation of the viewpoints of the diverse interests involved in national geospatial activities and the development of the NSDI • Committee membership should reflect geographic balance and experience with multiple sectors of the geospatial community • Members should effectively represent a constituency or community of interest • Members should have a record of significant accomplishment and be recognized and respected within their fields • Members should be able to speak authoritatively on geospatial matters and communicate complex issues to a broad audience in a simple manner • Members should have a collaborative, consensus-building approach

NGAC Appointments • 28 Members • 14 Members from Non-Governmental Organizations (Private Sector, Non-Profits, Academia) • 14 Members from Governmental Organizations (State, County, Local/Regional, Federal, Tribes) • Staggered Terms • 14 3-year terms, 14 2-year terms • Subsequent appointments for 2-year terms

NGAC - Next Steps • Appointment letters and background information to be distributed to appointees • Initial organizational committee meetings (develop bylaws, procedures, etc.) • Public meetings following initial organizational meetings – Spring 2008 • Updates will be posted at www.fgdc.gov/ngac • Potential topics for committee review: • OMB Circular A-16 – updates/revisions • The NSDI – next steps • Homeland Security – roles and responsibilities • Climate Change – roles and responsibilities
