  2. Web-based GIServices • Data Warehouse (Catalog & Metadata) • Interactive Internet Mapping Facilities (Internet Map Servers) • On-line Analytical Tool (Java applets) for Remote Sensing Images and Change Detections.

  4. Project Overview • Create a prototype framework for Web-based GIServices in Environmental Monitoring. • Explore different Internet technologies. • Integrate/Customize different software and programs together. • Case Study Areas: Mission Trail Regional Park (MTRP) with ADAR and IKONOS images.

  5. Data Warehouse • Use ArcCatalog to create metadata in XML for ADAR and IKONOS images.

  6. Data Warehouse • Create two version of metadata: FDGC Standard and Simple version (with the most essential elements). • Use HTTP to allow users to download images.

  7. Interative Internet Mapping • Apply ESRI’s ArcIMS software package to create a Internet Map Server on Microsoft Window 2000 Server with IIS 5.0.

  8. Interative Internet Mapping • Use JavaScript to create dynamic display of remote sensing images with different map layers.

  9. GPS / Remote Sensing Images Data Integration • GPS data collected by MTRP Park Rangers with their Trimble GPS units and Pathfinder Office software. • We converted the GPS data sets to Shapefiles and integrate them with our ArcIMS server.

Key Technologies • Java Programming (cross-platform) • XML (Extensible Markup Language) for metadata and communication with Internet Map Servers (ArcIMS – ArcXML). • Internet Map Server (ESRI’s ArcIMS, AutoDesk’s MapGuide, INTEGRAPH’s GeoMedia Web Map, SmallWorld’s Internet Application Servers, etc.)

Expert Review and User Testing • Expert review and questionnaire • Tutorial • Two user scenarios: • Equestrian Facility Development • BMX site and Trails Management • Participants: two MTRP rangers, one graduate student, one GIS specialist (former graduate student). • Location: MTRP visitor center and CESEAR lab.

Preliminary Findings • Easy to use (comparing to other GIS/Remote Sensing software) • Need to clarify some information in metadata and IMS tools (terminology from SANDAG and FGDC). • Need to clarify temporal or seasonal information about remote sensing images and GIS data sets. • These tools will be a good information resource for MTRP visitors. • IMS: Difficult to view/query data layer while RS image is in the background. • ADAR and IKONOS magnifier tools could be added into the Data Warehouse section.
