  1. Food test • We tested the food in our school on an ordinary day. The purpose was to see if our lunch contains all the nutrients that we need to have enough energy for a whole day. • We always have three dishes to choose between, including one ”breakfast” option and one vegetarian option. We tested them all.

  2. Method We used a laborative method and added different chemicals to see what the food contained • Biuret´s solution • Benedict´s solution • Paper stain test • DCPIP • Iodine Protein Sugars Fat Vitamin C Starch

  3. The results

  4. Conclusions We discovered a lack of nutrition in some of the food. Now we understand why we sometimes feel tired and don´t have enough energy in the afternoon. This lunch did not fulfill our needs.

  5. We noted that a lot of the food contained sugar, which is not a longlasting energy. Not much contains protein, so we really have to think of how to combine a healthy meal. This study might be misleading, because it is unusual that we get this much vegetables. Those who eat ”breakfast” certainly do not get any vitamines. And over all it is not much vitamin C. We should get more fruit!

  6. Source of error • It is likely that we have some sources of error, for instance it is unlikely that the kebab stew at all miss protein. The reason could be that we did not chop it enough.

  7. We have also done an interview with the kitchen staff • How much nutrition should a school meal contain? • - Anne says that the food shall be responsible under the Swedish National Food Administration recommendations and refers us to a website where it will be easy to look in to the amount of nutrients school meals must contain. But the website doesn’t work. But there is a law that the Swedish school meals should be nutritious. The vegetables will contain 25% of the types of carbon and 25% beans.

  8. How much does a school meal cost per student? Why do we have herring sometimes in school? (When it doesn’t fit with any dish) It was over from Christmas and needed to be used before it went bad. Approximately 15-16 SEK per pupil

  9. How many students eat in the canteen each day? Do you throw away much food? If it has not been out in the canteen is saved until the following day. But the other is thrown away, unfortunately. It depends on what kind of food it is. But about 1200 students eat daily in canteen

  10. How long can food be out in the canteen and how hot or cold should to be? Why is not served fruit with your meals? There is no such obligation and the fruit is expensive. It is a question of price. The hot food may not be colder than 60 degrees and the cold food is never more than 8 degrees. The food can be out in the canteen about 4 hours.

  11. What is it like to work as kitchen staff in a school? It's fun, stressful and instructive. We take a lot of criticism but you also get a lot of nice comments. But overall it’s a very nice job and I like it very much.
